by Horseshoe Reef. Chantours offers a one-day sailing excursion around Tobago Cays, Mayreau, Morphin, Palm Island and Petit St. Vincent on luxury catamarans. The islands of Trinidad and Tobago are the Caribbean’s most southerly, just 30 miles off the coast of Venezuela. They may be sisters but they are vastly different with diverse cultures and landscapes. The larger island of Trinidad is best known for its lively carnival in February, one of the world’s greatest street parties. Despite being the energy and manufacturing capital of the Caribbean, Trinidad is home to lush rainforests, vast savannahs, protected wetlands and the world’s largest natural asphalt lake. Serene Tobago, just 21 miles away, offers a slower pace and is believed to have been the inspiration for Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe. There are golden beaches, impressive coral reefs, world class drift diving, lush rainforests, great hiking trails and bird watching, plus luxury resorts. The boat trip to Little Tobago is a must with lunch at Jemma’s Treehouse restaurant.

The Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis is now more accessible with increased air service from the East Coast of the USA to St. Kitts. St. Kitts is larger and livelier, while Nevis is a small, tranquil island with old-fashioned Charlestown, the Caribbean’s oldest church dating back to 1643 and beautiful hideaway resorts, just two miles apart.

Or go Dutch, and visit the Netherland Antilles Islands. Bonaire, Curaçao and Aruba lie south, off the coast of Venezuela and have fantastic beaches and Dutch- inspired architecture. Further north, visit St. Eustatius’ historic fort and nearby, bustling St. Maarten.

Grenada’s little sister, Carriacou can be done in a day. The volcanic island of Montserrat with its lush vistas is a great contrast to its close neighbor Antigua and is just a 15-minute flight or 75 minutes by ferry.

Barbuda lies 27 miles northeast of its sister island, Antigua and is just 62 square miles. This low-lying coral island has untouched pink-sand beaches. Or get on a cruise. Most start from larger islands like Barbados and go on to visit tiny islands.
