Did you know?
Shell Beach on Guyana’s north-east coast is a 90-mile (145 km) stretch of millions of tiny shells – and a nesting ground for hawksbill turtles.
Guyana is South America’s only English-speaking country, a nature paradise that lies off the conventional ‘beach and sunshine’ tourist path. The population is a unique ethnic and cultural potluck, predominantly peoples of African and East Indian descent, peppered with the indigenous Amerindians, salted with a touch of Europeans and Chinese, and flavoured with our own ‘Dougla’ of mixed heritage. Guyana is spread over a geographically diverse eighty three thousand square miles, dissected by three mighty rivers and several meandering creeks. The capital, Georgetown, is the economic centre. The low coastal plain is home to most of the population, while the hilly sandy region, savannah low lands and mountainous regions remain relatively unpopulated, but rich in
pristine rainforests, minerals and ecosystems.
Experience our diverse wildlife and ecological parks – nature resorts provide an interesting mix of comfort and taste of nature; see more than 800 species of birds, 15 species of turtles and many rainforest wonders.
The architectural and historic sightseeing offers plenty to discover from the St. George’s Cathedral, the tallest freestanding wooden building in the world; the Botanical garden, and Stabroek Market.
Hidden gem
Spend two evenings, Friday and Saturday, club hopping on the street that never sleeps - Sheriff Street. Try the Banks Beer and the El Dorado 21 year old rum, both winners of international gold medals.
What’s Hot
Kaieteur Falls is an exotic display of nature’s power where water thunders down 251 metres
