DESTINATIONS British Virgin Islands www.bvitourism.com Caribbean Challenge

Climb the trails to the top of Gorda Peak and Mount Sage.

Sixty islands, islets and cays make up the archipelago that has fascinated sailors for centuries and enchanted holiday makers since the sixties. For lovers of beauty, peace and tranquility, the British Virgin Islands offer a complete antidote to mass tourism. No high rise, no hotel chains, no all-inclusives, in the British Virgin Islands the resorts are small and luxurious but low key. Several private islands to suit all budgets, such as Necker, Guana, Cooper and Peter, offer the ultimate in exclusivity. But all hotels and resorts, from quaint shoreside B&Bs to three, four and five star properties, provide a stress free ‘get away from it all’ experience. Most visitors to the British Virgin Islands take to the water in some way, whether on a sailing holiday, on a day sail from their hotel or resort, or for diving, snorkelling, windsurfing, kiteboarding or fishing – including specialist deep- sea charters. Seeing the beauty and tranquility of the islands from the water, mooring at the world famous beach

at ‘The Baths’, finding your own desert island for the day, and swimming ashore for a Painkiller (rum cocktail) at the Soggy Dollar Bar, are all experiences not to be missed.

Most of the islands, including Tortola

and Virgin Gorda, are volcanic in origin, but still have the advantage of perfect white sandy beaches.

Hidden gem

A day trip to the island of Anegada, the only coral atoll in the British Virgin Islands and is only 45 minutes away from Virgin Gorda. There you can literally walk for miles on the sand beaches and never see another footprint. Watch the pelicans dive-bomb the turquoise water in front of you.

Foxy’s and the West End Yacht Club have been doing a 2-day regatta for well over 30 years.
