Caribbean Challenge

Take a half-day hike to the 2,000 foot Quill, a classically shaped volcano with a forest-filled crater.

Did you know?

Part of old Oranjestad has been reclaimed by the sea and on calm days, the foundations can be seen from the shore-line.

St. Eustatius, fondly called Statia, is a quiet haven for visitors wanting to explore and experience the Caribbean the way it used to be. Undiscovered and relatively unknown, one will find this fascinating tiny island almost crime free. Upper Town Oranjestad is littered with a unique variety of historical sites and monuments dating back to the 1700’s. These include a colourful and charming collection of well preserved typical Statian houses with gingerbread trimmings. A carefully mapped out walking tour covers the Lower Town and Upper Town. This tour features noteworthy sites such as the St. Eustatius Historical Museum, Dutch Reformed Church, Fort Oranje, Honen Dalim Jewish Synagogue, and cobbled stone streets, all testimony to a period in the 1700’s when the island was commonly known as “The Golden Rock”.

In St. Eustatius, marine life is protected and managed by the Statia Marine Park. Diving among pristine reefs, wrecks, walls and abundant sea life remains a favourite pass time for most visitors. The Charlie Brown and the Stenapa man made reefs are a diver’s dream come true. It’s time to come and discover the many hidden treasures of St. Eustatius, the Caribbean’s Hidden Treasure.

Hidden gem

St. Eustatius changed hands 22 times between French, Dutch and English. The Caribbean’s Hidden Treasure is the marketing slogan. Take a hiking expedition to the perfectly formed extinct volcano called the Quill. It’s 2000 feet, with a descent of 270 metres below sea level into a lush tropical rain forest with well marked trails to the Miriam Schmidt Botanical Garden.
