LUFTHANSA Cargo, the freight-carrying division of the German flag-carrier, improved its performance so much during the first quarter of the year that it almost matched the levels seen in 2008. It carried 390,000 tonnes of freight and mail in the period, up by 19.3 percent year-on-year on the first quarter of 2009.
ETIHAD Airways, the Abu Dhabi-based UAE flag- carrier, inaugurated a non- stop, five times a week A320 service between Abu Dhabi and Baghdad on 27 April. Etihad is the first airline from the UAE to offer scheduled passenger services to Iraq.
FINLAND has become the 25th location to implement IATA e-Freight, bringing the benefits of paper-free air cargo to the country’s supply chain. Finnair led the implementation on the Helsinki – Hong Kong trade lane in association with forwarders DB Schenker and DGF.
INDUSTRY veteran Des Vertannes has been appointed global head of cargo at the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Based in Geneva, he will take up the post in June.
ABC grows its route network
Moscow-based AirBridgeCargo Airlines (ABC), the scheduled cargowing of Russia’s Volga-Dnepr Group, has extended the network coverage of its nine- aircraft fleet of B747 freighters. In April, ABC launched its first service into Scandinavia,with a B747 freighter
flight fromits hub atMoscow-Sheremetyevo International airport toMalmö. In a separate development later the samemonth, ABC introduced aweekly
B747-400ERF flight between its Frankfurt base and the Korean city of Seoul via Moscowand Tokyo-Narita on 25 April.
PACTL spreads its wings
Shanghai Pudong International Airport CargoTerminal Co Ltd (PACTL) and the company inwhich it is the largest shareholder, PACTL West, handled 911,255 tons of cargo andmail in 2009 and together they are continuing to expand. Most notably, on 1December last
year the PACTLWest facilitywas put into operation and it is still expanding in scope. Located in the north of theWest CargoArea of Shanghai Pudong International airport, directly to thewest of the third runway, it offers 121,000m2 warehouse space, 930ULD(unit load

device) positions and specialist storage rooms for dangerous goods, valuables, perishables, live animals and human remains. Atotal of 38 freighter parking
positions are available at PACTL West, a joint venture owned by PACTL (which holds a 56 percent stake),Air China (with 39 percent) and SHK Beijing Logistics Development,which has a 5 percent share. Four airlines –Air China, Cathay
Pacific, and its sister carrier Dragonair, andMalaysiaAirlines – are all active at the PACTLWest facility.
