According to Lilian Chan, generalmanager, marketing and customer service at air freight handler Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (HACTL): “Late 2008 and 2009were verymuch the dark age of the aviation industry. As the slowdown lurched into 2009,we witnessed over a 30 percent year-on-year drop in January 2009, and a decline of over 20 percent in the first quarter of last year. “Since the global

economy delightfully showed signs of stabilisation fromthe third quarter in 2009, the market has picked up faster than expected. Not only didwemanage toweather the storm,we also achieved record-breaking tonnage results in the first quarter of 2010. This even slightly surpassed the tonnage volume in the first quarter of 2008 before the downturn by 3 percent, registering a year-on-year growth of approximately 37 percent. We are also thrilled to have recorded an all-time

“We…recorded an all-time high weekly tonnage level in the last week ofMarch 2010.”

According toMarkus Klaushofer, chief commercial officer at Moscow Sheremetyevo International airport: “Altogether we saw a decrease of over 20 percent during the downturn, so I’m not sure that we can get back to the same sort of figures that we had in 2007 within the next four or five years. “Maybe we will see a

‘double-dip’ recession in the short term. One factor that will bring a certain reality to the marketplace is thatmuch of themanufacturing growth seen up to 2008 was driven by heavy consumer debts. I think the financialmarket in future will actmore carefully in regard to private loans. This will restrict consumer buying power and this could lead to slower growth and recovery in the air cargomarket. “The simple driver behind recovery in the air

highweekly tonnage level in the lastweek ofMarch 2010. Given these very encouraging results,we remain optimistic about the overall outlook in 2010. “We expect a single-digit growth for thewhole year,

and should the global economy remain on the recovery trajectory at the current pace,we could possibly get close and return to the levels seen in 2007 bymid-2012. “Having said this, whilewe believe that the strong

volumes reflect the consistent recovery as a result of resuming stocking needs and consumer sentiments, wewill not underestimate the potential challenges ahead. Long-termprospectswould still depend on the foundation of the overall global economic development.”

freight industry is that globalisation requires all kinds of products to be transported around the globe in the search to find the cheapest and best production places and then to take the finished products to themarketplace. “But this has alsomade it verymuch cheaper to

transport goods and this has presented the industry with both huge opportunities and huge challenges. However, as the logistics industry is always very competitive and it reacts quickly to economic changes, I believe that we are already well prepared for the next upturn. “I see Asia as being amajor contributor to the

recovery trend and I believe that looking into the longer period we will have growth – but it will take time.”
