Herrmann notes ‘the increasing importance of environmental topics’
environmental damage they claimthat long-haul freight transportation does to our world. According toMenen at Emirates SkyCargo: “Active green lobbieswill increase the public consciousness of taking environmental responsibilitymore andmore seriously and this lobbywill force for a better level of compliance. However, let us not kid ourselves, at the end of the day the cost at the shelf level and the resultant profitabilitywill be themain drivers of the desire to outsource production.”
He continued: “Aswe go forwardwewill see a better
balance between global and regional outsource activity… and thiswill be based on the developing science of inventorymanagementwithin supply chainmanagement.” In Vienna, cargo-partner’s Krauter noted: “The 21st
centurywill enter into history as the onewhere the human racewas, orwas not, able to learn that our planet is limited in resources and that it is completely unacceptable thatwe destroy the atmosphere for ever.” In Shanghai, Globelink’s Cai believes that environmental
concernswill eventually bring a lot of change to theway industry views its globalisation policies, but he believes that this is a process thatwill takemany years to come into effect. Long-haul transportation isworking hard in its technological efforts to become environmentally friendly, he said, adding: “Anti-dumping and other trade policies and protection issueswillmean that some outsourcingwill become nearsourcing, but globalisation will continue to represent the bulk of trade because of the fundamental difference in regional economic development and resource.” In conclusion, the University of North Carolina’s Kasarda
emphasised: “The bottomline is that outsourcing is here to stay. Itwill increase as global competition continues to heat up and long-distance transportation becomesmore efficient and less costly per unit/kilometremoved –which is the trendwith larger, more fuel-efficient vessels and aircraft being delivered every day.”
