new freighter
FOR CHINA? B747-8F by Bob Saling
United States. Boeing projects that air cargo traffic relating to Chinawill lead theworld in growth rates. “According to initial industry data, the China air freight
marketwas less adversely affected than other geographic markets during themassive air freight downturn of 2008/2009,”notes TomHoang, Boeing regional director, cargomarketing for Boeing. Five Chinese airports, including Hong Kong,were among
theworld’s busiest cargo airports last year, according to Airports Council International,with three of the airports showing traffic gains. All this news, coupledwith China’s status as a
manufacturing centre for theworld,would seemto bode well for the prospects of large freighter aircraft, particularly the B747-8F,with China-based airlines. Indeed, both China Cargo and China Southern have B777 freighters in their fleets, and Chinese carriers operatemore than 25 B747- 400Fs, both factory-produced and converted, not to mention a handful of older, less efficient B747 freighters.
Looking down the road, the benefits thatwould be in the
offing for the B747-8 freighterwith China’s air cargo operatorswould bemuch the same as for those already havingmade the commitment to the aircraft – efficiency, capability and infrastructure compatibility.
FLEXIBLE CAPABILITY The B747-8 freighter has a range of 8,130kmand a maximumstructural payload capacity of 140 tonnes. Itwill offer 16 percentmore revenue cargo volume than the B747-400 freighter and the additional volume (120m3
)
provides four additionalmain-deck pallet positions and threemore lower-hold pallets. It retains the B747 freighter’s revenue-producing nose-
door loading capability, aswell as the ability to transport industry-standard three-metre-high pallets,with real-world cargo density capability at 159kg per cubicmetre. This also allows for interlining of palletswith B777 freighters and the in-service B747 freighter fleet.
