technologies; the ultra-efficient structure helps tominimise the operating emptyweight per tonne capacity; and the new-designwing incorporates the latest aerodynamic airfoils, raked tips and a simplified lightweight flap design, further improving the aircraft’s overall fuel efficiency. Coupledwith the improvement in fuel efficiency is an

equivalent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions and Boeing has been able to reduce the B747-8 noise footprint around an airport by 30 percent compared to today’s B747- 400 as a result of the application of the latestwing and propulsion systemtechnology.

THE NEED FOR AIR CARGO China’s status as theworld’s premiermanufacturing centre is expected to continue, with key industries geared toward commodities such as computing, telecommunication equipment and apparel – commodities traditionally transported by air. Most of these goods are intended for export, and China haswitnessed a tremendous increase in international air trade. Strong air export traffic to Asia, Europe and North

America has drivenmuch of the expansion seen in China’s domestic air cargo traffic. However, domestic demand in China’s rapidly-developing large cities has also become an important driver for growth during the past several years. China’s ambitious economic growthwarrants

investment in asmany infrastructure projects as possible. This includes amodern and integrated ground and air transportation system. Any air traffic diverted to upgraded

ground transportation, including high-speed rails and highways, willmore than likely be offset by the resulting boost in personal income associatedwith these infrastructure improvements. The drivers that bring newfreighters tomarket are the

need for increased efficiency and economic growth. For Chinese carriers to growprofitably, considerable attention must be paid to each of these key elements. Earlier this year, the International Energy Agency noted

that China’s demand for oil jumped by 28 percent in January 2010 comparedwith the samemonth last year. With projections for a global increase in demand for the year, the prospects for reduced fuel prices are not considered likely. “The 747-8 freighter provides an outstanding

opportunity for Chinese airlines currently operating B747- 400 and earlier-model freighters to improve their efficiency and provide growth for route networks,”Hoang concluded. The growth projections for China, the continuing

demand for Chinese goods amongWestern consumers, the increasing prosperity in China – particularly in themajor cities – all combine to provide a strong case for the B747-8 freighter tomake itsway into the Chinesemarket and to be a successful element in the growth of the country’s air cargo industry.
