Cargolux adds transpacific services

Korean enjoys strong growth


Korean Air,which carriesmore air freight than any other scheduled passenger carrier, has bounced back strongly fromthe troubles of 2009 in the first half of this year. The Seoul-based carrier achieved


its highest-ever first quarter operating profit earlier in the year, a result assisted considerably by some impressive performance in its freight division. Cargo traffic rose year-on-year by


21.1 percent to reach 2.32 billion freight-tonne km, although capacity rose by only 10.8 percent year-on-year. Revenuewas up by 57 percent


over the same threemonths of 2009 and Korean said that –while results have improved on aworldwide

basis – performance on routes to China and Japan proved particularly rewarding, as did the domestic Koreanmarket. The airline is also upbeat about


the rest of 2010, believing that its cargo business is “expected to prosper”. Korean points particularly towhat it predicts to be healthy exports of IT products, high growth of intra-Asia demand, lower fuel costs and greater stability in the US exchange rate. “Korean Air sees the cargo


business as a strong growth driver in 2010, andwill continue its concerted efforts tomaximise the profitability of this business segment through a range of initiatives,” the carrier commented.


Ogiermann, Cargolux president and CEO: “The transpacific flights connecting the Far East to ChicagoO’Hare and NewYork JFKwere started in order to furtherwiden our service offering to our customers through our second-largest hub – Hong Kong.” He pointed out that Cargolux


already offered direct westbound freighter services fromHong Kong to European destinations including Budapest and Barcelona. The carrier confirmed that it


expectsmostly general cargo to be shipped on the transpacific sector. “The response fromthe market has been good and the operation has been smooth,” Ogiermann said.
