While demand in the air cargo industry fell in the latter part of 2008 and prettymuch throughout 2009, one sector held upwell for the vastmajority of those involved in it – pharmaceuticals, more generally known as ‘pharma’

hipping highly perishable and easily damaged goods has always taken special care and required particularly complex handling. But these needs, taken in tandemwith the high-value but low- volume nature of pharma shipping, havemeant a


high price can be paid for the service. While air freight consignments plummeted as the global


economy shrank in thewake of the 2008 financial meltdown, the demand formedicine, vaccines and other pharmaceuticals changed little in reaction. “People still get ill,”observed one freight forwarder involved in the sector. With demand remaining strong and a high yield to be


earned, the number of carriers participating in this business has risen dramatically in recent times. Perhapsmost noticeably, severalmajor US airlines have recently introduced various pharmaceutical shipping products. Continental Airlines, for example, has launched ClimateSecure. The airline is

number of airline players in the industry, he commented:“For those who can get out of the‘just put freight on


the plane’mentality, there are significant high-yield opportunities to be exploited. “Pharma opportunities are driving a lot of this change inmindset, but other products requiring special handling…will also likely garnermore focus going forward,”Mohr explained.
