Beijing is acting to overcome the country’s shortage of skilled logisticians. SamChambers finds outmore


owhere on the planet has investedmore in tertiary education than China in the past decade. Some 1,070,000 students in China graduated fromuniversity in 2000with their qualifications. In 2009 therewere 6,100,000.


The UK, by comparison, had around 260,000 graduates last year. Cities right across China have founded educational institutions catering to every facet of industry and commerce. In Dalian for instance, the citywhere thiswriter resides, there are now22 universities – and this is considered a second-tier city. The number of university graduateswill hit a record high of 6.3million this year – that’smore than the entire population of Scotland. Similarly, theworld’smost populous nation has spent


more than anywhere else on freight transportation to assume its position as the factory of theworld following membership to theWorldTradeOrganisation in 2001. Air cargo volumes across China have leapt from1.6


million tons in 2000 to 4.25million tons in 2009while the eastern seaboard has been coated in giant cranes and concrete quaysides, the number of seaborne containers jumping from23.5million units in 2000 to 121million last year. Trade volumes have spiralled faster than the number of


graduates studying logistics-related courses in the People’s Republic – despite the vast total number of university students in China – and the shortage of talented young recruits in the transport/supply chain sectors is set to become increasingly acute. According to the China Logistics Association, the


industry needs around 300,000 peoplewith junior degrees this year alone, and there are only likely to be a tenth of that figure graduating in 2010with the right qualifications. In terms of the national shortages facing the logistics


industry in the coming five years the association suggests the shortfall of non-qualified and qualified people entering
