more to help them make a difference. People who have made the switch to more sustainable products are actively doing their bit for climate activism. Beauty activism is also making its mark on the metaverse. Gen Zers are creating digital beauty communities, products and subcultures that are designed to push back against current societal pressures.

PRESSURE AT THE TOP Beauty and politics are intrinsically linked. However, it is taking the government a long time to come around to this. When I first started the British Beauty Council, I was aware of the disparity between the power of beauty and its lack of government representation. We set ourselves the challenge of defining what British beauty really is and its true value. In 2018, we worked with Britain Thinks, a leading insight and strategy agency, to set boundaries for what is and isn’t beauty: the first definition of its kind. We were then able to use this definition to value the beauty industry. At the time, we concluded that the beauty industry contributed £28.4bn to UK GDP.

The council really came into its own when the pandemic hit, as it highlighted the cracks in the foundation of our

in a variety of different products. It is mainly used in food supplements, but increasingly in the cosmetics industry. It has been shown to alleviate stress and

anxiety. Although, at the moment, it is important to know that you cannot make any medical claims to that effect, although there are studies that are starting to show that this is indeed the case. But how does it work in cosmetics? CBD has been reported to have anti- inflammation effects and shown benefits for the treatment of acne, as well as other more severe skin conditions, like dermatitis, psoriasis, etc. It is also known for having antioxidant properties. The other cannabinoid I’m going to

touch on is CBG. This is increasingly being introduced into products although it is relatively under-investigated. It is also non-psychoactive and non-intoxicating, so you’re not going to feel high. And it is starting to be used more and more in cosmetic products. It has been shown that it may be very beneficial for skin health. A recent study showed that it reduced

industry. Salons were shut for 140 days and turnover fell by 45% compared with 2019. We launched a series of media campaigns in publications read by the Tory party and by business owners in our sector to give them the ability to shout for themselves.

From ‘Bring Back Beauty’ to ‘Chop

The VAT’, we worked tirelessly to bring a voice and focus to an industry that felt forgotten throughout 2020. Because of all this, we were given a place at the table to present proposals for a package of beauty industry-saving measures.

GREEN ACTIVISM We worked with Anna Teal, CEO of Aromatherapy Associates, to commission a report to set out a vision of how we can move forward together to create an industry that nurtures the planet and protects our future. The research presented some of the most damaging planetary effects of our industry.

reactive oxygen species in cultured cells and reduced the appearance of redness on the face.

ABOUT BRITISH CANNABIS British Cannabis is the largest independently owned CBD manufacturer and was founded in 2015. Recently, in the food industry, we’ve been regulated under the novel foods act. Only certain companies are now allowed to sell CBD foods and we are on that list.

Some of the products that we have

released include a dermal patch: CBD infused with essential oils and terpenes, which are released by body heat. Our key cosmetic at the moment is CBD

cream, a proprietary blend of terpenes and essential oils for fragrance.

We’ve also just held a Plastic Solutions Summit during British Beauty Week (5-11 September 2022) with some of the leading organisations in personal care to get them to sign a pact to make changes.

The British Beauty Council’s Sustainable Beauty Coalition was formed as a result of ‘The Courage to Change’. Its task force is dedicated to educating consumers and business owners about the importance of sustainable switches. We have a ‘Planet Positive Beauty Guide’ that you can download for free from our website that will help your consumers understand what claims are on products. Everything we do, we make open- source, so everyone can be on this activism journey with us. Annabel Kindersley, co-owner of

Neal’s Yard Remedies, and Jayn Sterland, Managing Director of Weleda and Chair of the Sustainable Beauty Coalition, are spreading the word about the damaging effects of insecticides as part of a wider save the bees campaign. And we took a letter to Parliament to ensure that the government is aware of what we’re campaigning for. If you collaborate, you’ll find like-minded people. And if people aren’t like-minded, maybe you can convince them to think differently

We are also looking to introduce a CBG

version and an expanded version with whole plant extract. There is a common term in the cannabis

industry, which is the ‘entourage effect’, which refers to the idea that, while taking each molecule in isolation is beneficial, it is more beneficial if you take more of the plant together.

I also wanted to talk

about the regulation of controlled substances and how that is managed. The law states that you are not allowed more than 1mg of controlled

substances in a closed container, which is bizarre because it doesn’t matter about the size

of your container. The controlled substances in cannabis

are most notably THC and CBN. All of our products are tested before

they leave, so we know that they are free from – or contain below detectable levels – of these cannabinoids before they leave.
