Skin care: old favourites & newcomers

As I write, I am getting ready to attend in-cosmetics Global in Barcelona where I will be on the discovery trail of new cosmetic ingredients. Some of these will undoubtedly include individual suppliers’ new takes on existing categories and concepts, which give companies like yourselves a broader selection for your innovations. However, the ‘fist pump’ moment for me, as a journalist, is when you discover something that represents a genuine novelty in terms of origin, mode of action, or – best of all – concept. This might indicate a nascent trend that will take international markets by storm in the years to come. On that theme, April’s Cosmetics Business delves into two very different skin care ingredient genres, both of which are enjoying a resurgence.

Cosmetics Business magazine ISSN 2634-8586 (Print) is published monthly by HPCi Media Limited, Natraj Building, The Tanneries, 55 Bermondsey Street, London, SE1 3XG, UK. Material may be reproduced only by prior arrangement and with due acknowledgement to Cosmetics Business magazine.

Ceramides (p16) are enduringly popular and especially suited to combatting the effects of cold weather on the stratum corneum. But these TEWL-busting molecules have recently taken skin care by storm, to the extent where the industry’s biggest suppliers are increasingly investing in their production. Also popping up everywhere in recent weeks have been mushrooms – potentially literally, but largely as a hero ingredient in lotions and serums. In this issue, we look into which brands are superfans of fungi (p50).

But alongside these trending stalwarts, Cosmetics Business is giving a platform to NAD+, the buzzing skin care ingredient of 2023. To discover more, turn to p43.

And ensure you get your hands on the next issue to find out my favourite discoveries from Barcelona!
