advanced to the point where everything that’s needed to process as Atmos mix can fit in a discreet, easily configured sound bar or home assistant. The technology is a lot less expensive and intrusive, with many users buying Atmos devices without even realising.


“The development of upfiring speakers along with Dolby’s partnerships with various steaming companies mean it’s never been easier to listen to high quality audio in various surround sound formats,” said Jigsaw24’s Senior Pro Audio Consultant, Saxon Greenep. “Pairing two Alexa Studios with Amazon Music really surprised me. Having listened to Atmos in many pro environments, this combination made listening in my living room exciting to me.”


Binaural support makes mixing surprisingly simple


Atmos’ support for binaural playback on headphones is a big advantage for your production team. You can use it for premixing, track laying, and the approvals process. “Binaural mixing isn’t the answer to everything,” explained Jigsaw24 Head of Audio Matt Ward. “Your final mix should be done in a Dolby studio so you have the right sound pressure levels and guaranteed performance. But as a tool for getting an idea of how your sound design will work, creating the interim steps of your mix and ensuring you and whoever you’re collaborating with are on the same page, binaural playback makes everything a lot simpler.”


It’s the most intelligent archive format


Atmos is intelligent enough to render for the speaker set it’s being played out to. Once you’ve done your Atmos mix, the renderer can output in 7.1 and 5.1 all the way down to stereo, without the need for you to do separate passes. If you create an Atmos mix of your project for an IMF archive copy, it’s relatively simple to revoice that and drop whichever version you need into the mix. So even if your primary deliverable isn’t currently Atmos, it makes sense to be able to produce Atmos content in order to speed up re-versioning and futureproof your projects.


Your hardware options are highly flexible


It’d be easy to think working on an Atmos mix remotely, or from a temporary studio during lockdown would be impossible. But you only need Dolby’s


rendering unit for your final mix – in the interim, you can work easily in any space. “We’ve been able to deliver some level of Atmos functionality for clients in any kind of space,” said Matt. “Between binaural headphones, low profile installation speakers and powerful studio solutions like Avid MTRX Studio it’s a lot easier to adapt a space to Atmos that people think, and most of the work can be done by your existing gear, so costs are lower than expected, too.”


This is true even if you’re collaborating internationally - we recently worked with a British post house to QC Atmos mixes which were being finalised in Canada, using Streambox to move 16 channels of live audio across the Atlantic and decode full Atmos audio and its host video in sync.
