can shoot any format and qualify for Netflix. It has become, for us, the go-to Netflix camera.” Procam Take 2 says that “with Netflix doubling
its UK production budget to $1bn, demand for the newer large format digital cameras like the Alexa Mini LF, Venice and RED RANGER MONSTRO 8K VV will continue to steadily grow in 2021.” Other newer cameras are breaking through
too. “The market has wholeheartedly embraced the Canon C500 MkII,” says VMI with others reporting the camera picking up speed. There’s been a surge in Sony’s new FX9 and
FX6 models too with the FX9 already third in our top ten list. The Kit Room says it anticipates “the latest Sony line up – FX9, FX6 and A7S MkIII – to become increasingly popular and become favoured by DoPs, PDs and self-shooters alike.”
In the frame Full frame is increasing its dominance and Procam Take 2 says there will be “a slow manoeuvre over to full frame for factual, commercial and music video production in 2021.” Pro Vision says “we now have more and more requests for Sony’s new FX6 and FX9, and with what we have seen of them so far it’s hard not to imagine they are the natural market replacements to the FS7. Large format and brilliant autofocus, what’s not to like?” S+O says that “when work picked up in late summer and autumn, the FX9 quickly replaced the [FS7]. Productions realised the benefits of full frame depth of field, improved dynamic range and improved colour rendition. Full frame is most definitely here to stay and in the FX9 we have the new all-rounder.” Hotcam says that “large sensor
is very much still at the top of the list and full frame is now making a serious move into the market. We are finding that there is a much larger demand for cameras with auto-focus now that this feature has become more advanced. It used to be that AF was glitchy and unreliable, but now it can be used as a powerful editorial tool, allowing for greater freedom while operating gimbals and handheld cameras.” COVID has wrought other changes too.

There’s been a change at the top of our list of the top rental cameras in the UK hire market. For several years now, Sony’s FS7 has taken the winner’s podium but the Alexa Mini has now pipped it to the post. Shift 4 says the Mini is “still the
ES Broadcast reports that “given the changes necessitated by COVID-19, it’s no surprise that our Panasonic AW-UE150 and AW-HE130 PTZ cameras have been in demand. Likewise POV cameras such as Sony’s HDC-P50 and HDC-P43 have proven popular as they can be mounted on remote heads and jibs and operated at a distance.”
workhorse in high-end broadcast. With the small modular design it can adapt to any setup and a wide range of integrated accessories and comfortable workflow for post makes it really popular. Also, with cameras like the Alexa Mini LF being released, the original Minis have become more affordable.” Procam Take 2 similarly says the Mini remained the “top choice for
commercial and pop promo work, as it is well-loved by DoPs.” It also points out that “throughout 2020, whilst traditional concerts could not go ahead, there was a “huge increase in demand for large- scale live-streamed performances, and the go-to cameras for these were the ARRI Alexa Mini and ARRI Amira used in Multicam mode, giving a cinematic look and high-production value whilst retaining the familiar workflows of traditional OB camera channels.” Pro Vision too says that the camera
“remains the most popular drama camera, proving itself as the industry standard workhorse year after year” and “still has a few years left.” Video Europe similarly says that camera “is still hugely popular and will be for another 12 months” while VMI reckons the Mini will “continue its dominance in the UK production industry as it continues to be the go-to camera for the majority of drama and commercials productions.” But while it’s on top now, there’s
a general sense that it will soon be supplanted. As Dynamic says: “the Mini is now five-plus years old and DPs are going to be attracted to the Mini LF in S35 with a fancy new VF, better media and newer accessories.” And S+O reckons the ARRI Mini LF has already “replaced the Alexa Mini as the popular choice for commercials and branded content.”
