Hired for Filmstore - Hospital, Repair Shop; The Kit Room - SuperVet, Heathrow, Unearthed, History of Britain; London Camera Co - My Mortgage Free Home; Pro Motion - First Dates, Trucking Hell, Escape to the Country; RunVT - Full Monty on Ice, Rich Kids Go Skint; S+O - Celebs Go Dating, Black, British and Funny; Shift 4 - broadcast; Soho Broadcast - Ad agencies, freelancers, production co’s; VMI - Enslaved, Babies (Netflix), Mark Ronson

Stalwart, the Sony FS7, moves into second place after years at the top. Filmstore says it’s still “the dominant camera in the factual entertainment space” and Procam Take 2 says the pandemic meant “a lot of clients sticking with the tried and tested cameras that they already know.” Run VT reports a “huge surge in demand for our FS7 cameras between August and December 2020 and, although this has slowed, I think we will see our FS7 fleet hold fast for the rest of 2021.” Shift 4 says the FS7 is “still the most popular camera for factual television - self-shooters are very comfortable with them.” But most say a change is coming. S+O is just one saying that “the FS7 will continue to drop off as people realise the improved picture quality of the FX9.” Shift 4 predicts the FX6 will also supplant it “as it’s roughly the same price but has better specs.”

Top 5 hire from Filmstore, Hotcam, The Kit Room, London Camera Company, New Day, Procam Take 2, Pro Vision, S+O, Shift 4, Soho Broadcast, VI Rental

Hired for Filmstore - Little Mix: The Search, The Bidding Room; The Kit Room - Forensics, Drug Project, Freeze; London Camera Co - dry hire; New Day - music promos, Hotel Secrets; Procam Take 2 - factual productions; ProVision - Firefighters; S+O - Big Night In, I’m A Celebrity; Shift 4 - broadcast; Soho Broadcast - ad agencies, production co’s, multi-cam productions

Sony’s FX9, introduced at the tail end of 2019, drops right into third spot of the top 10 rental cameras. Shift 4 says it’s taken off quickly for several reasons. “The body build is the same as the FS7 with many of the same features and codecs so it could be adopted easily by anyone comfortable with the FS7. It also includes the highly effective auto focus from the Alpha stills camera range, so when paired with compatible lenses, it means even in full frame a self- shooting PD need not worry about focus.” Soho Broadcast says the FX9’s popularity comes from its “amazing auto focus with face detection and the ability to shoot 16bit raw. Its advance features work well in all situations from high end productions to in house interviews.” “The FX9 is certainly gaining momentum” says the London Camera Co in a comment echoed by many.

The FS7 MkII drops one place in the survey this time from last year’s third. The camera can still be considered an industry favourite with Hireacamera saying that the “Sony FS7MkII and the Canon C300MkII continued their dominance as the top two units hired.” Procam Take 2 points out that in a year where “most of the filming happened with much smaller crews” the FS7 MkII is a camera that is “still the go-to choice for a lot of self- shooters” and handy for “factual productions wanting a filmic look on a budget.” But maybe not for long. The Kit Room points to the FX6 and FX9 taking its place and Pro Vision says: “In the factual world the FS7 MkI and MkII remain top dogs, but we now have more and more requests for Sony’s new FX6 and FX9.”
