ARE WE THERE YET? At the time of writing the UK has just reached the glorious first anniversary of Lockdown 1, and what a year it’s been. But Spring is here, the rule of six is approaching and the pub gardens are
opening soon too. So we’re through the worst of it, right? Let’s hope so. The threat of new variants and new lockdowns remain but, compared to this time last year, we seem to be in a better place. Although producers have had to innovate like they never have before,
much of the production and post production sector has at least some reasons to be cheerful. The spending power of the streaming giants has grown rather than shrunk in the past year and that has had an effect on much of the UK production community, particularly at the high end. With that in mind, this issue we have collected together a host of talent
- from colourists, to VFX Supers, to audio experts - to talk about the new demands of delivering in HDR and Dolby Atmos, required as standard for much of the streaming market. We’ve also taken a deep dive into the varied and complex technical
requirements of the SVODs in our ‘What the Streamers Want’ piece. We also ask the UK doc makers about the growing demand from those

same customers for documentary with global appeal, something many of the UK’s foremost producers are happily supplying. We also take a look at a post sector that, surprisingly, has seen a raft of expansions and start-ups in recent months as a hint of confidence hits the sector. Even in the live event TV sector, possibly the worst hit out of all TV sectors,
there’s a sense of positivity, or determination at least. In our Genre Report this month we talk to live TV makers who have had to dig deep and find innovative and creative solutions for the near total shutdown of live events themselves. Across music, sport, theatre, awards shows and more, they have unleashed a wave of creativity and technology, much of which will be here to stay. And as it’s Spring, that means it’s time for our annual Commercials 30
Survey, our showcase of the best ad production companies in the business and the talent that makes it all happen. Unsurprisingly, those companies have had a rough ride through 2020. As with the rest of the production community, their world pretty much shut down back in March last year as shoots became impossible and millions of pounds worth of work was cancelled. But things are better there too. Most report a surprisingly buoyant end of 2020 and are feeling tentatively optimistic for 2021 too.
