BREEDERS ACHIEVEMENTS Parkgill Outside Eclipse EX92-3E LP100

Parkgill Outside Eclipse is an EX92 classified Outside daughter that is now coming towards the end of her eighth lactation and has produced 100t lifetime. Having calved in January 2005 as a heifer she gave 9946kg and produced 12,096kg in 305 days in her eighth lactation with a lifetime SCC of 59. Life for Eclipse hasn’t been without problems, in January 2011 she calved with her sixth and was struck down with a phosphorus deficiency in February 2011 which left her needing aid to stand. Being a determined individual with a real will to live she made a full recovery following the necessary treatment. Despite this set back at the start of her sixth lactation she went on to produce 12,308kg, her best so far.

She has good shaped feet and has only needed them trimming twice in her lifetime and has only had one mild case of mastitis.

Eclipse has bred three milking daughter including a VG Delka Juror Gordon that has given over 50t and is in her sixth lactation. She also has a third calved VG daughter by Gibson, a GP second calver by Dixie Lee Aaron and a promising yearling by Ballycairn Tiergan. As Parkgill Outside Eclipse comes to the end of her extended eighth lactation she will have clocked up 110 tonnes, qualifying for an LP110 award. She will dry off at the end of October and is due to calve again at the end of January 2016 to stock bull Stardale Veagle. She is a truly remarkable cow that we hope to see receive more awards in the future. John Parkinson

Carkin Outside Ivory EX93-4E

Carkin Outside Ivory EX93 and has so far notched up a lifetime yield of 106,295kg over eight lactations and is one of those cows that makes you smile and makes milking a pleasure. Not only as a high producer, but also a well put together cow that has bags of character and was certainly one of the best cows I worked with during my year contract farming. She was one of the first cows to calve last spring and caused the odd sleepless night as she paddled and I got up to check her...before a long labour resulted in ‘Knuckles the bull calf’.

Alistair Smith (Futureproof and former Holstein UK classifier) had nurtured her over a number of previous calvings and wasn’t wrong when he said she was high maintenance at calving time. She came to a rush of milk and then hit rock bottom – she was my first vet visit too. Naturally, as an Outside daughter she bounced back and completed a 305 day eighth lactation of 12,771kg at 3.46%bf and 2.96%p before being dried off still giving nearly 20 litres a day ready to calve at the end of May to Stantons Steady. Ivory was frequently the first cow in the parlour, in fact on numerous occasions she had the ability to lift the rear parlour gate, let herself in, drop the gate and stand waiting for you. She could even get back round and still be first in if you ushered her through and back in to the bottom of the collecting yard. This robust cow was bred by I R and J M Walton. She belays her years and hopefully has a good future ahead of her in the expert hands of new owners Knaptoft Farms and Nick Sercombe in Leicestershire together with her promising Struik two year old daughter.
