SOUTH AND WILTSHIRE
Club president John Stratton welcomed 47 members to the Avebury Club for Holstein South and Wiltshire’s AGM. A report of Club activities over the past year was given by Jeff Daw, which included a visit to the Royal Farms Jersey herd at Windsor, an afternoon at the races, stock judging by kind invitation of the Miflin family at West End Town Farm and the herd competition presentation evening held at Little Langford Farm by kind permission of Nick and Topsy Helyer. The calf show was a popular event held at Newbury and judged by Dawn Coryn. Then in the autumn the Club went to Mike and Rosemary Windell’s Ayrshire herd for a farm visit, with the final event a quiz organised by Catherine Elmes.
Caroline Huins gave a report on the HYB activity during the year and the fund raising for the 2015 HYB Rally, while Richard Francis organised and judged the winter herd competition in February. The Club also enjoyed a successful annual dinner dance with 68 members enjoying a traditional roast followed by a raffle in aid of the HYB rally which the Club is hosting this year and a disco rounded off the evening. Society president Randolph Miller and his wife were welcomed on the evening and Randolph proposed The Loyal Toast. WESTERN Western Holstein Club has had another busy spell with the Top 10 winter herd competition held in February. Sponsored by Semex the competition attracted 13 herds which were inspected over two days. Judge Aubrey Greenhalgh was impressed by the standard of animals presented and decided to sponsor a surprise award for what he deemed to be the best animal. Results: Large Herd Winners - Ray Brown and Partners, Bidlea Small Herd Winners - Joseph Heler Farms, Helton Best Individual Animal - Joseph Heler Farms, Helton Baltimore Lisette The awards were presented during the AGM in March, while other awards included the Club’s Member of the Year going to Andrew Jones. The Club chairman, Graham Dimelow, received the Holstein UK Club Award. HYB coordinators presented the Michael Roberts trophy for best young member at the National Reasoned Stock Judging to Jodie Nutsford, the Stapleton Trophy merit award went to Mark Robinson and the Young Member of the Year was Robert Featherstone. The meeting was well attended and Meurig James from Holstein UK gave an interesting, though-provoking and amusing talk to round off the night.
The annual dinner and dance was held for the first time at the Carden Park Hotel. Guests were kept entertained during the meal by magicians and afterwards treated to a dance display from the National and European Under 21 Latin Champions A J and Chloe who were semi-finalists on Britain’s Got Talent 2013. The spring show attracted many regular exhibitors as well as some new entrants with animals travelling from as far as Cumbria and Leamington Spa. The Club is grateful to judge Elwyn Thomas from the Gatrog herd, all exhibitors and sponsors and also to the show directors Jane and Phil Arrell for their tireless work putting the excellent event together. In April the spring bull show and sale was held at Beeston with six herds entering a number of bulls.
