BALMORAL SHOW T
aking centre stage in the judging ring was John Lawson from the Sweetings herd, Lancashire, and he found his grand champion in the form of Clonpaddin MPW Jill from Lisburn-based Conor McAufield, who runs the Lissue herd. Purchased from breeder Gary Hurley last year and carrying her second calf, this VG89 scored Atwood daughter won the Baileys All Ireland heifer championship in 2014. Calved in December, she is giving 44kg a day and stood second at the Irish National in March. She is out of Clonpaddin FZG Jill 2 GP84, a Final Cut daughter that is backed by three generations of VG or EX.
Commenting on his champion John said: “It has been a fantastic show and the top two in each class have been really good. I admired the height the champion carried her milk, she also had great bone quality and strength of top line. “It was a close placing between the top two, but the reserve champion followed on nicely. She is a power house of a cow, but lacked the dairy quality of the champion on the day.” Standing reserve was Ards Atwood Lou Ella VG89 from H Patton and Sons. She calved in October, is giving 39kg a day and is back in-calf to Silver, due in December. She stood honourable mention overall at the Royal Ulster Winter Fair last year, was reserve champion at the Irish National 2014 and nominated All Britain junior second calver 2014. She is the 11th
