by a contract farmer and put in-calf to a Jersey bull to calve down at two years old. Terling Bonus, Montgomery Grey Valiant, Lavenham Creator, Huddlesford Doraman, Grove Speculator and Wraxcourt Bounty all bred well for Peter in the early days. And in recent years Tittenser Hylke and Leasthorpe Fernley have sired many impressive daughters.
Retained bull Rearsby Accumulator, a son of Grove Specualtor that was born in 1993, also had a massive impact on the herd with more than 100 progeny registered. His dam was Rearsby Elsa 10, by Lavenham Creator, that gave more than 80 tonnes in 12 lactations at 4.2%bf and 4%p. Accumulator bred well and his daughters lasted many lactations with high milk quality.
The herd recently achieved a rare feat, with three generations of cows from the same family classifying EX on the same day. The fi rst of these was Rearsby Black Label 8 EX91 an outstanding daughter of
Rearsby Black Label 19 BFE91, is in her seventh lactation - completing three generations of the family milking in the herd today. Black Label 19 has averaged 7719kg for six lactations at 4.87%bf and 3.93%p and is the dam of Rearsby Black Gem, a son of Deangate Centurion at Genus. The fi rst daughters of Black Gem have just calved at Rearsby and Peter is pleased with them so far. Black Label 19 is a daughter of Tittenser Hylke and Peter says: “Hylke is the best bull we have ever used. He has improved conformation and his daughters have lasted well with fantastic protein percentages. When Genus bought a bull from Black Label 19 we decided to get the family classifi ed and all three generations were scored EX on the same day, so we were very pleased. “Without a doubt Black Label 19 is the best cow in the herd today. She is a modern Friesian, a dairy cow with the ability to milk well, and just the type of cow we are looking for.” “Blackisle Mist 38 BFE90, by Fintalex Norman, is another tremendous cow we bought at the Blackisle dispersal sale in 2007. She is milking in her 10th Blackisle Maverick.”
