Obituary: Pete Lanfear 1947-2015

Pete Lanfear or ‘Pete from Frome’ as he preferred to introduce himself, passed away on 19 April following an emergency operation from which he didn’t regain consciousness. Pete was one of those great characters of the farming world and will be much missed by all those who knew him.

Pete worked for CIS since it was founded and was immensely proud of what the company had achieved. He took every opportunity to promote the benefits of milk recording with CIS and even had his own banner which he put up wherever he saw a convenient space – even if he was asked to take it down occasionally. He never missed a chance to fly the flag for CIS and was a regular at farms walks, open days and HUK/HYB training events and shows

with the South West Dairy Show and Frome Show his particular favourites. He loved cows and appreciated and understood the demands of dairy farmers. He was always ready to give an opinion – whether it was asked for or not – and took great pleasure in working with farmers. Jane Targett of the Carymoor herd knew Pete well and described him as always cheerful and happy to help her as a fellow milk recorder, even at short notice.

Pete lived with his son Steve and two grandsons, Darren and Andy whose upbringing he was largely responsible for. He passed his love of dairy cows on to Andy who was a regular at calf shows and this gave Pete great satisfaction and pride. Pete was very grateful to Tim Quick (Mendip) in particular who helped by lending calves, advice and training.

Pete saw everyone as equal and always went the extra mile without being asked. He took his job seriously and tried to find the best way for it to work for CIS in the most cost effective way. You won’t get another Pete.
