ROYAL ULSTER WINTER FAIR
Championship honours at December’s Royal Ulster Winter Fair, Belfast, headed South of the Irish border with Southern Irish cattle making up nine of the 12 cows in the final championship line up
olsteins were very much to the fore at the Kings Hall, Belfast, from start to finish, winning each of the three interbreed championships under Ontario-based Canadian judge Brian Carscadden.

Securing the overall honours in the interbreed championship was the Holstein champion, Desmond Dundee Embrace from Philip Jones’ County Wexford based Hallow Holsteins and owned in partnership with Roy Cromie. Shown by Philip’s brother Richard this fourth calver was purchased as a month old calf for €10,200 at the Cream of Ireland Elite Sale. Classified EX93, she calved in May and was shown giving 45kg a day. She came through as the winner of a very strong mature cow class, she stood honourable mention and was awarded best udder at Emerald Expo 2012. Bred by Martin O’Sullivan she is out of the EX95 Budjon-JK Durham Embrace. Commenting on his winner Brian said: “The champion is not an extreme cow, but she is very balanced and correct with the best udder in the show.”
Standing reserve to her in the Holstein championship and going on to be honourable mention in the interbreed was John and Jack Cooney’s Hallow Bordermist Sid Fran. This January 2012-born heifer had already stood interbreed heifer champion that day having previously been heifer champion at Tullamore and Millstreet and reserve heifer at Baileys. Calved at 25 months old in February and shown giving 32kg a day, this VG88 scored heifer is out of Bordermist Sanchez Fran EX92 who stood second in the third calver class at the Winter Fair. She was purchased as a calf for €3900 from David and Kenny Boyd, Denis O’Neill, Michael McGinley and Phillip Jones’ Bordermist Syndicate. “I was so impressed by the openness, angularity and dairyness in this heifer, she has veination throughout. She impressed me from the moment she first walked in the ring, she is special and one to watch in the future.”
