Backed by seven straight generations of EX dams with high components, this red and white bull created a bidding frenzy, with the highest bid coming from M E Kenwell who runs the Gulladoo herd based at Fintona, County Tyrone. Earlier in the day this powerful bull caught the eye of judge Paul Flanagan, Termonfeckin, County Louth, to take the supreme championship. “He is a very correct, strong and powerful bull, an excellent example of the breed, with a great top line and rump,” said Mr Flanagan from the noted Tubbertoby herd.
Ronald, Malcolm and Barry McLean sold nine bulls from their Relough herd to average £3208 per head. Their best traded at 5000gns, with this being the PLI award winner Relough Ardour. Born in September 2013 and carrying a PLI of £451 this Co-op Bosside Massey son is out of Relough Iota May, a VG87 two year old who is the number two genomic PLI cow in the UK. Backed by eight generations of VG or EX he sold to R Elliot, The Grange, Downpatrick.
The next two best prices also came from the McLean’s herd with the second prize winner Relough Grenadier making 4550gns. Carrying a PLI of £421
this May 2013-born bull is by Genervations Latimer, his dam is the GP83 two year old Relough Beacon Gloriette who gave 9900kg at 4.3%bf and 3.11%p in her first lactation. He was purchased by Sean O’Brien from Poyntzpass, County Armagh. At 4450gns was the reserve PLI winner Relough Alligator who has a PLI of £425. Sired by the Mascol son, Co-op Bosside Massey he is bred from six generations of EX dams, his dam Relough Goldwyn Amy 4 EX averaged 11,267kg at 4.71%bf and 3.35%p in three 305-day lactations. He joins John Hamilton’s herd at Bangor, County Down. Also breaking the 4000gns price mark was Philip and Simon Haffey’s Gillette Windbrook son Glasson Focus. This bull stood honourable mention in the pre-sale show and is out of the VG87 two year old Berryholme G Jordan Flo who gave more than 10,500kg at 4.07%bf and 3.23%p in her first 305- day lactation. He was knocked down to Robert Anderson, Dungannon, County Tyrone. Averages: 27 bulls £3107. (Taaffe Auctioneers).
Wexham Cup The Western Holstein Club’s 63rd Annual Wexham Cup Show and Sale of pedigree Holstein bulls attracted an entry of 52 head. The pre-sale show was judged by Paul Westaway of Sterling Sires and winning the Wexham Cup for judging combined with production and pedigree type traits was John Downing’s Wintersell Millicio. This son of Bertaiola Mincio is out of Wintersell Mila 10th EX93 who has a lifetime production of 50 tonnes and has already bred eight EX and VG daughters as well as Wintersell Milo who is at Cogent. She is the only cow from the UK to be nominated for Holstein

International’s Global Cow of the Year 2014. The successful bid of 5200gns came from Steve Cox who purchased Millicio for his Steveacre Herd at Marston, Stafford. Second top price at 4000gns was for Millicio’s
ET brother Wintersell Magnifico, he joins George Sanderson’s Sandley herd, Blackleach, Preston.
Philip Gilman then sold Lilleshall Superstition at 3100gns to L Hadfield and Sons, Buxton. This Charlesdale Superstition son is out of the VG88 Butler-Butz Sam Autumn, a daughter of EO Siemers Ashlyns Angel EX96.
Three bulls then traded at 3000gns including the reserve
Wexham Cup champion and overall inspection champion Woodmarsh Zumero from Mick and Jean Gould. Sired by Amighetti Numero Uno he is out of the EX91 Woodmarsh Goldwyn Zandra who has a lifetime production of 50T and earned six stars as a brood cow. He sold to Devon to Derek Pule of Clyst Honiton.
The Goulds also sold Woodmarsh Leaton at 3000gns to Robert and Wendy Hayes, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. This Jeeves son is out of the renowned Lyme family with his dam being Woodmarsh Laudan Lyme 30th who gave 11,463kg at 4.18%bf and 3.15%p in her fifth lactation.
Also making 3000gns was Richard Pilkington’s Aintree Dominant Red, a son of the homebred Ronelee SS Dureable son Aintree Rancher Red. He is out of the EX93 Pinebeck Sept Dairychain and sold to D A Morris, St Clears, Carmarthenshire. Averages: 36 Bulls £2241.46. (Wright Marshall)
Wright Marshall November Mid-Month A top price of £2500 was achieved at Wright Marshall’s Mid Month Sale by Jack and Barclay Taylor’s red and white heifer, Burnbrae Apple Recise Red. Sired by Big Apple Red and out of a dam by Rampage she sold giving 32kg to David Green, Lach Dennis. Next best was Danevalley Steady Jewel from A L Moore and Partners who was the highest price in the Focus Milk section. This Stantons Steady daughter carries four generations of VG dams and sold giving 34kg for £2420 to T R and J M Oultram and Sons, Warrington.
