NORTHERN IRELAND The Hilton Hotel in Templepatrick was the venue for Holstein NI’s 16th

annual dinner and

presentation of awards. Club chairman Gaston Wallace welcomed everyone and said he was delighted to see such a good turnout of guests, club members and their friends. He congratulated David and Kenny Boyd

from Glaslough, County Monaghan, who had a tremendous show season with their two homebred cows Glaslough Miss Petra EX91 and Glaslough Goldwyn Bret EX93. The much-admired Glaslough Miss Petra was

supreme and exhibitor-bred champion at the Irish National Holstein Show at Moira in March and was crowned Holstein and reserve interbreed champion at Balmoral Show in May. This tremendous fourth calver was runner-up at Emerald Expo,

Tullamore Show and the final of the Bailey’s Dairy Cow of the Year competition at Virginia Show. She rounded a successful show season by winning the supreme championship at the 32nd

National Dairy Show held

at Millstreet in County Cork. Gaston Wallace also congratulated Holstein Young Breeders’ Club member Mark Henry, Stranocum, County Antrim, who has recently returned from the Cremona National Holstein Show in Italy. He won the showmanship and show preparation awards in the senior section of the competition. During the evening the Holstein Young Breeders’ Club held its Embryo Sale Part II, which netted a further £1875 for the 2017 National Weekend Rally fund. The auction was conducted by club member Wallace Gregg and the HYB is indebted to the following breeders who donated embryos for their fund raising campaign: David and Kenny Boyd, Glaslough; William Robert and Bryan Graham, Kells; the Henry family, Stranocum;

Leading the auction at £500 was an embryo from Antrim Show’s interbreed in-milk heifer champion Glamour Iota Ambrosia VG87 2yr X Pine Tree Altaoak. Highest bidder was James Walker from the Randalstown-based Caddy Herd.

Entertainment was by Fiddler Adam, and the awards

were presented by the vice chairman’s wife Mrs Monica Smith.

SHROPSHIRE Where does the time go? By the time you read this we will be well into the New Year. September and October were busy months for our Young Breeders. Firstly preparing and competing in our qualifier at Market Drayton along with our friends from Stafford and Western Clubs, which was judged by Claire Swale for the handlers and Isaac Lancaster for the calves who both did a splendid job for us on what turned out to be one of the driest days in our area for weeks. The team then set sail for Malvern to compete at ABAB and acquitted themselves very well indeed, with Steph Whittaker taking Honourable Mention in both the handlers section and the calf championship with Firstlook Aftershock Ricki. As a team they finished second for Tidy Lines thanks to the family O’Neill and Co and third overall in the showmanship classes with all of the team getting placed in the top line and then third in the calf classes which resulted in third overall in the Top Team Class. We are very proud of all our Young Breeders who are lead by Charlotte Cope who works very hard to include all the HYB section in all activities.

Have you ever heard of a musical trio called THREE MEN IN A BOW TIE? They have been performing for 21 years and include our very own dairy farmer Martin Jones who can make anything from baler twine, at a reasonable price, along with Sally Jones and our man from the BBC Chris Eldon Lee.

They performed at our opening winter meeting to great acclaim with classic comedy and manic monologues. This evening of laughter included a traditional fish and chip supper prepared by the chef at Halls Fine Art restaurant. We are looking forward to rearranging Colin Dent’s visit to us as he had to cancel, following an incident at home at Bridge End. The AGM took place on the 8th

December and having completed two years, our Chairman Mat Beeston stood down and Jane

Arrell stepped up to assume the role of Chairman to be followed by Richard Apperley who was elected as Vice Chairman. Following the formal part of the meeting we had a talk given by Katie Davidson from Mooandbaa who, as the current editor for the Holstein Journal, gave us an insight into her work and experiences which was very interesting. Father Christmas made an early appearance at our Children’s’ party organised by Charlotte Cope and assisted by Jane Arrell and many others who occupied the children with crafts, games and the usual excess of e-numbers which added to the excitement of Santa’s arrival, who possibly had been over indulging in his build up to Christmas, or perhaps his suit had just shrunk in the wash!
