WESTERN Western Club’s Holstein Young Breeders enjoyed their trip to the All Breeds All Britain Calf Show and were thrilled when Harriet Edge came in third in the Junior Showman class and also when calf Riverdane SVS Atlee was awarded Overall Champion. The Young Breeders are growing in experience and confidence and we look forward to following their achievements over the coming year. Thanks go to all Western Holstein Club members who organise and co-ordinate the Young Breeders participation in these events. With more than 50 bulls registered to appear, this year’s Wexham Challenge Cup Bull Show and Sale, held at Beeston on Thursday 6th November 2014, was an excellent representation of the breed and well attended by potential buyers and Holstein enthusiasts. Our Judge, Mr Paul Westaway, gave an interesting and entertaining talk on the previous evening, covering his start from scratch as a farmer, setting up Sterling Sires and a strong discussion about genomics. Results from this year’s event are as follows:

Wexham Cup Champion Bull: Wintersell Millicio from The Downing Partnership Wexham Cup Res Champion: Woodmarsh Zumero from M and J C Gould Ltd Champion Bull on Inspection: Woodmarsh Zumero from M and J C Gould Ltd Res Champion Bull on Inspection: Bestfed Desteny from S L and P S Bell and P & N A Findlay Western Holstein Club is now looking forward to many more events during 2015.

NORTHUMBERLAND

For the November meeting, the Northumbria Club welcomed 2009 Gold Cup winner Geoff Spence (Miresdale) to address the club and give us a talk about his farm, the herd and his achievements to date. It was a fascinating talk, with an interesting presentation, showing just how the business has progressed through the years, dealing with the highs and lows that we all endure in this industry. Having never been ones to shy away from hard work, their determination paid off in 2009 when Geoff and his family were awarded the Gold Cup. There was a lively Q and A session afterwards before a light buffet .

WEST MIDLANDS The West Midland Holstein Club had the pleasure of hosting a winter meeting with guest speaker, Michael Eavis in late November. This meeting was kindly sponsored by Kite Consulting. More than 50 members and guests enjoyed a great evening in Gloucester. Michael gave us a great insight into the running of the farm, dairy unit as well as the world famous Glastonbury Festival. He is justifiably proud of all these achievements, and of winning the NMR/RABDF Gold Cup in 2014. John and Pam Taylor manage the dairy unit, and Michael acknowledges their enormous contribution to the success. Plans for the future included a more automated milking system and winning the Gold Cup twice more! We would like to thank him for making the journey to see us and look forward the Gold Cup Open day 6th May 2015.
