Craven Christmas Dairy Auction Securing the Christmas Show championship and top price of the day at Skipton’s Craven Dairy Auction was the Lawson family from Newbirks. They took top spot with a fresh calved heifer Newbirks Jazz 1589, by Lynncrest Zebra she is backed by five generations of VG or EX dams. She sold 24 days fresh and giving 32 litres a day for £2500 to Stephen and Edward Jeanes, Glusburn. Standing reserve champion and trading at £2100 was John and Jenny Booth’s Flashouse Lavanguard Irma. Giving 36 litres she was snapped up by John Howard, Heslaker. Averages: 22 heifers in milk £1755. Kilrea Bull Sale


Black and white bulls were met with a steady trade at Holstein Northern Ireland’s Show and Sale held at Kilrea Mart, averaging £1821 with a complete clearance. Sale leader was the second prize Killane Echo from Austin and David Perry. This seventeen-month-old by Gillette Wind Hammer is out Killane Eddie Elegance 34 VG87. Backed by five generations of VG and EX dams, he sold for 2400gns to W McCormick, Ballycastle, County Antrim.


Second highest bid of the day at 2150gns was Mervyn and Gareth Smyth’s Lylehaven Lightning son Ballyweaney Black Lightning. Born in April 2013 he is out of the EX92 Sherdon Lucine who has produced 100 tonnes of milk in her lifetime and gained 24 brood cow stars. He was bought by Maurice Hughes, Kircubbin, County Down. Next best at 2050gns was Glasson Blaster from Philip and Simon Haffey, he is a May 2013-born Claynook Dude son. Out of Glasson Canyon Balise EX94 who is fresh with her fourth and producing 55.4 litres daily and backed by five further generations of EX dams, he sold to Alex McMaster, Broughshane, County Antrim.


Securing the pre-sale championship under judge John Berry of the Skybrook herd was Glasson Brutus also from the Haffey family. Born in April


BELOW Leading a steady trade for bulls at Kilrea was Killane Echo at 2150gns.


2013 this Sully Hart Meridan son is also out of Glasson Canyon Balise EX94 making him maternal brother to Blaster. He attracted a bid of 2000gns from Andrew McAuley, Bushmills, County Antrim.


Another from the same home also made 2000gns, this time, Glasson Senitor who stood fourth in the judging. Sired by Mountfield SSI DCY Mogul he is out of the VG88 Glasson KJ Jasper Sara, a daughter of the Balmoral and McLarnon Dairy Cow champion Copywood Goldwyn Sara 2 EX92. Carrying seven generations of VG or EX Senitor sold to Neil Thompson, Millisle, County Down.

Beeston Mid-Month Sale The Wright Marshall Mid Month Sale attracted a larger crowd in December than previous months and trade was better than expected, although not as good as consignors have been used to. A top price of £2550 was achieved on two occasions, first to make this price was the very well bred heifer Linlake Braxton Brita from David Bourne. Sired by Braxton she carries 10 generations of VG or EX dams going back to the noted ‘B’ family at Regancrest. She sold to Mark Brassington, The Wirral. Also making this money was Aliann Testarossa Orlando from Enchanted Holsteins. Backed by nine generations of VG and EX dams this Sabina Testarossa Red daughter sold to David Alderson, Northallerton.


Making £2250 was Skyhigh Recount Vaakje 2nd from Simon Powell, Burlton, giving 34kg a day she sold to D and H E Colclough and Son, Sandbach. At the same price was Wycherley Shottle Shanna 2 from Jack and Barclay Taylor, she sold giving 33kg she also sold to Messrs Colclough. The Barclays also sold a daughter of Curtismill Halo giving 34kg to the same buyer for £2200. Averages: 37 cows £1206.66, 130 milking heifers £1612.07 (including 38 Focus Milk at £1714.11), 34 served heifers £1112.13, 192 maiden heifers £525.57, 16 heifer calves £171.88. (Wright Marshall)


The Lawsons finish the dairy year on a high at Skipton Auction Mart


The final Craven Dairy Auction of the year saw David Lawson, Mill Farm, Arthington, emerge victorious once again at Skipton Auction Mart. Their victor was a three week fresh pedigree heifer by Stardale Downing. Giving 30 litres a day she sold for a top price of £2020 to Wick Williams, Nantwich.


Another pedigree heifer from the Lawson family stood reserve champion, 28 days calved and giving 30 litres a day this Morningview Levi daughter also sold to Mr Williams for £1700.


Third prize pedigree heifer came from M Baul and partners from Bishop Thornton and sold for £1960 to G and P S Fleetwood, Mirfield. Averages: heifers in milk £1620. (CCM Auctions)


Holstein Northern Ireland’s December Sale A large turnout of buyers resulted in strong competition for a quality line-up of dairy stock at Holstein Northern Ireland’s December Show and Sale at Moira. Prices ranged from 1100gns to a top of 3020gns, and 21 lots were traded to average £1960 a head in a 95% clearance.” Sale leader at 3020gns was the reserve champion Newry Gold Chip Barbie, a potential fourth generation EX from Jim and James Stevenson. Sired by the Braedale Goldwyn son MS Chassity Gold Chip, she is out of the Irish National Holstein Show prize winner Newry Dolman Barbie EX94-2E, who averaged more than 13,800kgs at 4.28%bf and 3% p in three 305-day lactations. She joins Steven Robinson’s Cluntagh herd based at Crossgar, County Down.
