great cows which themselves bred great heifers.

“Romandale Recount, Comestar Outside and Mesland Duplex have all left their mark here too, stamping their progeny and giving us great cows to work with. And one leaving a real mark at the moment is Comestar Lavanguard, himself a Goldwyn son. I’m really excited by his heifers and think they will make great cows in the years to come. “They’re correct, well put together animals with great udders and huge potential,” he says.

But while a number of bulls have left a mark it is the cow families which are the defi ning feature of the herd, believes David. “With no females having ever been purchased everything in the herd today goes back to those original 12 cows in the Normans herd. I think that’s quite an achievement and is testament to the quality of the families we’re working with.

“Of the families we have a number really stand out, with the Zinnia’s being a really classy family and couple of youngsters particularly catching the eye. These are Primans Minister Zinnia and Primans Sam Zinnia, this pair of maternal sisters are both classifi ed VG86 and are from six generations of VG or EX dams.

“One of the more durable families is the Elver family, with this line containing a number of long-lived cows with at least two 100 tonne cows in the family in the form of Primans Jethro Elver and Primans Elver, she was EX90 classifi ed and is great grand dam to a good couple of younger cows Primans Bolivia Top Elver and Primans Icepack Elver,” adds David. “The Twig family is another great line, being particularly prolifi c and leaving great yielding cows. This line crosses well with Duplex

The best family in the herd is the Gainful line

and Primans Duplex Twig 2 is a tremendous EX92 classifi ed cow. She’s given more than 70 tonnes to date and is out of Primans Storm Twig, which gave more than 80 tonnes. Also worth noting in this family is Primans Duplex Twig 1, a three times EX93 classifi ed cow.
