SOUTH AND WILTSHIRE This year our autumn herd visit took on a different format by changing breed colours and visiting the prize winning Ayrshire herd of Michael and Rosemary Windell at Wroughton, Swindon. The herd of 110 cows average 8261kgs with 606kgs of fat and protein making it the highest yielding NMR Ayrshire herd in the country.

After Mike welcomed members we looked at the cows due to calve shortly before going outside to see the milking herd. The herd looked spectacular out at grass on a bright, sunny autumn morning and although at grass, the herd is also fed silage throughout the year. On returning to the buildings we looked at the homebred youngstock and the bull.

After a barbecue lunch very kindly provided by Michael and Rosemary, Jeff Daw, chairman, gave a vote of thanks to the Windell family for such an interesting and alternative visit and tokens of appreciation were presented to them.

BORDER AND LAKELAND Members of Border and Lakeland HYB had a successful weekend competing at the All Britain All Breeds Calf Show. The show moved to a new venue at The Three Counties Showground in Malvern. The hard work and effort put in by the whole team is a credit to them all. The showmanship classes were once again strongly contended on

Saturday with all of them having between 20 and 26 competitors and were judged by Jessica Hassall. In the Junior section Robert Morley was placed 1st

was placed 2nd in class, William Horsley was placed 4th class and Mathew Williamson was placed 8th

SUFFOLK Suffolk Holstein Club are becoming quite a troupe of

intrepid travellers with yet another travelling experience under their belts. Some 15 Club members, along with a few Norfolk members, visited Northern Ireland for a four-day trip to leading herds in the area such as Majestic, Ballycairn, Killane, Ards and farm visits to Robin and George Binghams, the Steele family and Greenmount College.

The cold, wet weather did nothing to dampen our spirits and we were all impressed by the farm systems on view and the tremendous cows we saw along the way. The Ulster Show confirmed what we had seen all week with an excellent display of cattle on show and plenty of opportunities to talk about all things dairy with farmers and stallholders. All agreed that it was a brilliant show and definitely worth a visit again. Belfast itself offered us lots of culture including a visit to the Christmas market and the chance to tour the Titanic exhibition. We were treated to superb hospitality and made very welcome, so many thanks to all of our hosts, including Paul Dunn from Cogent for organising the visits and to Dick Gibson and Sue Godfrey for sorting out details prior to the trip.

Looking ahead, Suffolk have several events coming up including the AGM on 26th January at Flixton Buck, our quiz evening to test our grey-matter and our annual club dinner at the Waveney House Hotel on 27th March, 2015. For more information on Suffolk Holstein Club, please contact Club Chairman Gerald Godfrey on 07880 556714.

122 THE JOURNAL FEBRUARY 2015

In November Derbyshire Holstein Club held their inaugural Beetle Drive at The Venue, Ashbourne Bowls Club. This was an evening of fast-paced fun, which was steered by the incredibly enthusiastic Malcolm Bradbury. In addition to those present enjoying a sociable meal and competitive evening’s entertainment, we also managed to raise some donations for two charities as well as club funds. Our secretary’s wife Chris Morris sold friendship bracelets, with monies going towards a charity which supports deprived youngsters locally. While our MC of all things Beetle, Malcolm Bradbury, donated his fee to Marie Curie cancer care.
