SUCCESS FOR UK TEAM IN CREMONA

Rebecca Kirk reports from the third Open Junior Show held at Cremona National Show where Mark Henry, Emma Greenslade, Jonathan Woodhouse and Hannah Bown competed against international Young Breeders for the junior and senior championship titles

A

fter a day’s travelling the team arrived at the

showground late in the afternoon and joined the competitor briefing

and were kindly given personalised leather halters courtesy of ANAFI.

Then followed the allocation of calves each team would be clipping and showing, with this done on a random basis. The team then anxiously made their way to look over their selections. Generally pleased with the outcome, the team practiced leading their calves and then made their way to the hotel for some supper and a much needed early night.

Thursday saw the team wake up with high levels of nerves and excitement for the big day ahead. The team arrived at the showground bright and early to wash their calves and keep them well fed for the show ring. The clipping contest began shortly after, with the judges Quim and Jaume Serrabassa, carefully watching their every move.

Both judges seemed impressed with the UK teams clipping skills, but the team had to wait until after the showmanship competition for their results. Mark, Emma, Jonathan and Hannah then changed into their whites, finished fitting their calves and made their way down to the show ring for the showmanship competition.

The team members were thrown slightly by the presence of two judges and were certainly tested in the ring with having to continuously swap calves and swap placings in the lineup, but battled on and the proof was certainly in the pudding. To complete the competitions for the day, the team was then asked to judge and reason a class of four heifers in milk. The day was rounded up by ANAFI whom kindly took all competitors out for dinner.

Friday started with a technical quiz – something not experienced by any of the competitors, so it was certainly an educational experience. To give you a feel of the difficulty of the quiz, one task was to name four bull descendants from the bulls
