sires, Lavaman registered a massive £640 PLI in the latest April proof run. This was good enough to top the proven bull list by some distance and was only bettered overall by three young genomic bulls. Lavaman himself was the top PLI young bull in the fi rst UK genomic release in 2012.

FAMILY: Lavaman is a product of perhaps the most successful cross of the last few years in the Holstein

breed; O-man x Goldwyn. He is a maternal grandson of the famous Lylehaven Lila Z EX 94, via her Goldwyn daughter Comestar Goldwyn Lava VG 87 (2yrs). Lila Z captured the headlines when selling for CAD$1.15m at auction in 2004. She has since had a prodigious career as a brood cow, with more than 120 progeny registered worldwide. Her daughter Lava has more than 100 registered progeny and a number of sons in AI. Lava’s full sister has also bred the number 15 ranked PLI bull and also a son of Man-o-man, Genervations Lexor. Man-o-man was a former number one PLI bull and was in such demand internationally that he was cloned to produce Man-O-man 2, a bull currently in semen production in the USA. Eight of the top 30 proven bulls on PLI in the April proof run were Man-o-man sons.

HIS PROOF: Lavaman has an international proof based mainly on 825 Canadian daughters. His 93% PLI

reliability, achieved as a fi ve year old bull, demonstrates 94 THE JOURNAL AUGUST 2015
