HYB PROFILE Name: Richard Armstrong
Age: 24 Prefix:
Club: Border and Lakeland Wolfa
Occupation: Full time
at home running the Wolfa herd
How long have you been in HYB? I became a member of HYB at 6 years old, but didn’t start competing until I was 12 years old. My first competition was the Border and Lakeland Calf show in 2003 where I showed Wolfa Gibson Jen. She stood first in the December calf class and from that I caught the showing bug.
What have your highlights been?
Being a member of Border and Lakeland HYB brings a lot of highlights winning the B&L Calf show twice with Stannock Talent Kiwi and Wolfa Damion Roxy and also standing first at the All Breeds All Britain Calf Show with Tegan Pronto Rae in 2010 was very memorable. But one of my most memorable years was in 2008 when we showed Stannock Talent Kiwi as a two year old winning the heifer in milk championship at the Royal Highland Show and Super Heifer at Agri Scot then to top it off All Britain senior two year old, our first All Britain award. Apart from showing I also enjoy judging and winning the Border and Lakeland Scholarship in 2014 for winning the senior section of the stock judging was a great achivement. I used the scholarship to go to World Dairy Expo last year. Representing HYB at the Open Junior show in Cremona in 2013 was an honour and a great experience.
What is your Favourite event in the HYB calendar? The All Breeds All Britain Calf Show. There is no other show like it for competition and having a laugh at the same time.
What do you think you’ve gained from HYB?
I’ve made a lot of friends through HYB and it has given me the chance to work with great cows and other breeders. What other Hobbies do you have?
Basically anything to do with sport. I play a lot of cricket for my local team, Nunwick in the Eden Valley premiership, which seems to be going well this year scoring runs which is pretty handy as an opening batsman. I also play football in the winter.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I would like to take over the farm and to have developed some nice lines from the cow families we’ve bought into in recent years. I pretty much have a new idea every morning, so it would be nice to see some of them come together.
What would you say to someone to encourage them to take part HYB?
HYB gives you the opportunity to travel, learn and develop an array of skills. There are also plenty of opportunities to make new friends and contacts, with the social side to HYB.
What would you like to see new added to the HYB programme? I would like to see more opportunities for HYB members to compete with other European young breeders. THE JOURNAL AUGUST 2015 53
