Sales News Hampreston Dispersal


On 16th June at Sedgemoor Auction Hampreston Manor Farms’ 100 years of breeding as a closed herd drew purchasers from across the West resulting in a top price of 2050gns. Hampreston Herda 533, a Bolton daughter in her third lactation was top price. At the same money was the October calved Hampreston Hermione 784 that was due her third calf in October. Making 2000gns was the November calved heifer Hampreston Herda 539 who is also due in October.


In-calf heifers were a real feature of the sale with heifers due to calve in the autumn under two years of age selling at 1550gns for Hampreston Hartstongue 128, a Shottle daughter. At 1480gns was another Shottle daughter, Hermione 815. Young stock were slightly easier with buyers looking for a quick return on their investments, top price bulling heifer at 880gns was Hampreston Haughty 113. December born heifer calves sold to 500gns for Hampreston Heliotrope 195, a Laurelhill Classic daughter. Averages: 89 cows £1549, 32 autumn calving heifers £1332, seven recently served/bulling heifers £840, 25 yearling and younger heifers £465, 11 heifer calves £441. (Greenslade Taylor Hunt)


June Mid Month Focus Milk to £2500 at Beeston The Famous Wright Marshall Mid Month Sale on 9th June saw one of the smallest entries forward with just over 250 head. Once again leading trade was Jack and Barclay Taylor’s consignment at £2500 for Wintersell Susan 18, a February 2013-born daughter of Ballycairn Tiergan. Her dam twice gave 11,000kg and this heifer sold giving 34kg a day to John Allen, Leaventhorpe Holsteins, Burton-on-Trent. The Taylors also sold two heifers at £2250 each, a Charlesdale Superstition daughter bred in the Huddlestone herd and a homebred daughter of Bluesky. Both sold giving 34kg to J L and E M Parker and Son, Haughton, Stafford, who also paid £2150 for a daughter for Nethanvale Mel from the same home. At £2220 was another Bluesky sired heifer this time the choice of John Bayley, Nuneaton.


Once again many Lancashire vendors were well rewarded with a good trade for their quality cattle led by a super heifer, Fortland Madge 331 by Chalclyffe Stavros from J and N Hull and Sons of Winmarleigh, Preston, which went to a west Wales buyer. The same buyer purchased the Stantons Steady daughter, Joylan SS Tabby, from Joylan Farms, St Michaels, for £2080. Enchanted Holsteins, Elswick, sold a Mammoth daughter for £2050 to the Parkers. A small show of in-calf heifers was led at £1450 by a daughter of Luck-E Goldwyn Autopilot from David Ishmael, Wigan. Grosvenor Farms sold a Hydaways Goldmine daughter at £1420 with plenty of others around £1400.


At £920 was the best for maiden heifers with a 16 month old daughter of Bassingthorpe Bossman selling from R W Goddard and Partners, Dover.


A small entry of heifer calves sold well making a top of £440 for a four month old Cogent Twist daughter from S J and A L Broomhall of Calverhall. Averages: 50 cows £1226.80, 111 milking heifers £1516.75, 29 in-calf and served heifers £1234.14, 28 maiden heifers £734.81, seven heifer calves £353.33. (Wright Marshall)

a useful crowd of potential purchasers when it was sold at Beeston Castle Auction on 12th June on behalf of F Williamson and Sons of Wood End Farm, Snelson, Chelford, following their decision to cease milk production.


Demand for fresh cows and animals due throughout the summer and early autumn was good, but sluggish for winter calvers. Top price 1850gns was Snelson Active Ali, a heifer by Alpag Iron Active that calved in April. She sold giving 34kg daily and was one of 16 head purchased by A A Winstanley and partners of Audlem, Crewe. Next at 1720gns was another milking heifer, Snelson Alec Panache, who calved last September and is due with her second in November to Sudan Cri. Still giving 33kg a day she was purchased by J Richardson and son of Warmingham, Sandbach.


Not far behind at 1700gns was a July calver due to Cogent Raeson with her second. She was purchased by C and S Fitton and Son, Middlewich, who also gave a similar fi gure for the top priced in-calf heifer Snelson Superzed Ivy due at the end of August. Averages: 99 cows and milking heifers £1104.94, seven in-calf heifers £1548. (Wright Marshall)


Craven Dairy Auction


Sale leader and pre-sale champion at Craven Dairy Auction on 6th July was Startover Seaver Annabel from Robin Jennings. Purchased as a calf from Gavin Clarke, Ripley, this heifer by Seaver is out of Startover Whistler Annabel. Selling 11 days fresh and giving 31kg a day she was knocked down at £1900 to breeder Gavin Clarke, Brimham Lodge. At £1790 was the reserve champion Ravensgate Honesty 155, a Garrison sired heifer from Peter Baul. Giving 34kg a day this 17 day calved heifer sold to Alf Townsend, Burnley. Cows sold to £1800 for the fi rst prize winner, a third calver giving 50 litres a day from David Leeming, Burnt Yates, and selling to Tom Green, Wigan. Averages: pedigree heifers £1454, pedigree cows £1490. (CCM Auctions)
