“Also crucial to the short term development of the business is the identification and development of staff roles within the organisation. I’m a big believer in growing your own talent from within, providing they have the correct skillset or the ability to develop through wider training.”





What’s your short and long-term vision for the organisation? “Along with the above areas, the wider focus is on the sale of Scotsbridge House with a view to effective investment of the proceeds from the sale in a fit for purpose location that can provide a hub for this sector. “We also need to look seriously at diversifying our customer base and in time that might come from other sectors, such as non-pedigree dairy farms, beef producers or even pedigree sheep. Given where milk price is currently, we’ll not build our business turnover considerably from dairy producers alone. “Ultimately, data management is key at this point. We have the information to know what the national herd looks like now, so it’s important we then start to predict what the herd will look like in the future and develop our services accordingly. “But for me it’s about looking beyond five years and what Holstein UK can do on a wider level. We have to ask the questions – are we just a breed society? What role will genomics play in the future? How do we ensure our services remain relevant and cost-effective? Should we look to diversify, for example by purchasing other businesses involved in dairying? These are all areas that need exploring and assessing to ensure Holstein UK is at the top of its game.”


How do you envisage balancing business growth with member expectations?


“I think this is about education on both sides. My plan for the next six to 12 months is to meet all the regional clubs and communicate the key business messages, while also listening to members, reflecting
