with one class of heifers in milk, junior cows and senior cows in milk to test the judging skills of the 71 youngsters.


Official judges for the day were John Garnett from the Milnthorpe herd, Cumbria, fellow Cumbrian breeder David Hodgson, Wormanby Holsteins, and Willie Fleming from the Hillhead herd in Dumfriesshire. Together the judges deliberated over class placings and agreed on the official order.


John took reasons from the senior section who gave reasons on the heifer class. He commented: “There were three good quality classes to judge and the standard was high. It was encouraging to see that the best reason givers were also top individuals in their section proving they have good knowledge. I was also encouraged by most competitors giving positive reasons.” Winning individual in the senior section and best senior reasons with a score of 1690 was Lancashire’s Jennie Booth.

On an equal score of 1690 was Andrew Thomas from the East Midlands Club who won the intermediate section and best reasons for that section. Taking the reasons for the intermediate section on the junior cows was David Hodgson who thought the top dozen competitors were very good. “I was really impressed with the standard of reason giving. I’d also like to commend the Marshall family on putting on a super show of 18 cattle, which were of a high standard.” Junior judge Willie Fleming was impressed by the standard of the junior competitors who gave reasons on the senior cows and added: “The future looks bright for HYB.” Winning the junior section and best junior reasons was Tom Horsley from Border and Lakeland with an overall score of 1630.


Following the judging four animals were kept back for the linear assessment with competitors being given five minutes for each animal. Officials for the linear were Holstein UK classifiers Andrew Spicer and Iwan Thomas. Best individuals in the linear were Rosie Dennison, Lancashire, Oliver Easom, Derbyshire, and Andrew Patterson, Shropshire.
