Coombridge Dispersal
The dispersal sale on 8th June of the Coombridge herd of Holstein Friesians for Coombe Farms, Chepstow, at Monmouthshire Livestock Centre peaked at 1450gns.
Sale leader was a Lakemead Afton daughter, dried off and due a month after the sale with her third calf. Having produced 8584kg in her previous lactation she sold to H E and J A Cowles and Son, Lydart, Monmouth. At 1400gns was a second calved Galastar Bluesky daughter which calved in January and is giving 42kg a day. She was purchased by Go Farm, Usk.
Served heifers sold up to 1300gns twice, while 720gns was achieved twice for maiden heifers and heifer calves made up to 500gns. Averages: 117 milking cows and heifers £908, 53 served heifers £784, 20 maiden heifers £446. (Gwilym Richards and Co with Newland Rennie)
Boclair Wizard Has Magic Day At Borderway In spite of a good spell of weather and the continued downturn in the dairy markets, the June Border and Lakeland show and sale averaged £1505 with many selling for or above £2000. Sale leader at 2300gns was Boclair Wizard Camilla, this fifth Boclair Wizard daughter to sell in as many months, all with impressive udders. Giving close to 40kgs Camilla sold to Mr Robinson, Hexham. David Brewster also took the pre-sale championship with Boclair BG Echo. This correct uddered heifer by Boclair Goldwyn is backed by two VG dams and sold for 2200gns to the judge Willy Bryson, Carnduff.
The Brough family from Buckabank Farm, purchased a number of heifers including Hillhead Toyota Margaret from Robert and Willie Fleming, Kirkpatrick Fleming. Sired by Alta Toyota and bred from an Outside dam with more than 115 ton life time this stylish black heifer sold for 2200gns. Mr Bryson’s reserve champion went to Wormanby Destry Sandra consigned by the Hodgson family, Carlisle. This silky black daughter of Destry is out of an exceptional line of cows and sold for 2100gns to Newtonrigg College. Wormanby sold another black heifer with a super udder for 2100gns to A and B Bargh, Wood Close, Skelton. She is by Bassingthope Bossman. The Bell family, owners of the famous Holmland herd sold five heifers all displaying the ability to produce large volumes of milk and bred from world class families. Topping this special group was Holmland Lavanguard Ivy selling for 2000gns to Buckabank Farms. Averages: two cows in milk £1533, 68 heifers in

Heifers Sell to 1620gns At Ross Leading trade on 11th June at Ross-on-Wye was a calved heifer from Adrian Ratcliffe at 1620gns. Another heifer from the same home sold at 1550gns. Trade for cows was up to 1500gns for a second calver from F I Bevan and Sons, Ross on Wye. Also included in the same was the annual production
sale of summer calving heifers from the Davis family’s Daniels herd. Top price for their offering was 1320gns with 24 head averaging £1225. (Gwilym Richards and Co in consignment with R G and R B Williams)
Chesterton Dispersal
On 25th June the entire milking portion of Peter, Nicholas and Edward Jenner’s Chesterton herd was dispersed to a top price of 2200gns. Sale leader was a freshly calved heifer by Bassingthorpe Drayman out of a 10,793kg dam. She sold to G J and F L Robertson, Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire. At 2000gns was the highest priced cow, a second calved Eastview Sentry daughter giving 50kg a day and out of a dam that produced 12,239kg. She was purchased by B J Mould, Dunstone. In-calf heifers sold to 1600gns for an August calved Bassingthorpe Drayman daughter out of a Homestead sired dam that gave 8604kg. She was knocked down to P J Watkins and Son, Abergavenny. Averages: 101 milking cows and heifers £1282, 18 in-calf heifers £1344. (Gwilym Richards and Co)
Calved Heifers to 2800gns at Sedgemoor Exceptional breeding and a shortage of fresh milk produced an electric trade at the monthly Sedgemoor Auction Centre sale. Top price at 2800gns was Lucinda Morgan’s Treetop Alection Vanessa, a VG87 May calved heifer backed by five generations of EX or VG dams. R F Tucker and Sons sold Ottervale Playboy Dairymaid 60, a week fresh heifer at 2300gns. While Longmoor Farms sold homebred heifers for 2250gns and 2150gns and R T Cox for 2200gns and 2050gns.
Fresh calved cows from Longmoor Farms sold for 2000gns for the first lot through the ring Longmoor Jordan Daisy, a 35kg second calver. August born heifer calves from N, R and D Norris sold to 720gns
for Sandyhill Partridge 58, a Ballycairn Oman Pello sired calf. Averages: calved cows £2073, calved heifers £2020, yearling heifers £633.50, heifer calves £406.26. (Greenslade Taylor Hunt)
