BRITISH FRIESIAN FOCUS GERMAN TOUR PARTY M

id June saw a small group of German Friesian enthusiasts visit the UK to explore

the high standard of British Friesian herds. The group started their intensive two day tour of the UK with a visit to Cogent’s Beachin stud on the outskirts of Chester. Here they were fortunate enough to see some of the stud’s key British Friesian young sires including number one PLI young sire Inch Robert, Irish Friesian Coolmohan Flynn and also Lakemead Sebastian who has sold semen into Germany and the USA. After that the tour party visited Patrick Davies’ Hollinscourt herd. The herd demonstrated fantastic levels of uniformity throughout. Key individuals that caught the discerning eyes of the visitors were third calver Hollinscourt Garella Grouwstra and Blackisle Laura 59. This Glen Albyn daughter is mother to Skyhigh Leonard who has just finished on test at Cogent. Next stop was Rob Perry’s organic Peartree herd. Some of the delegates had been here

on a previous tour and were delighted to see Lakemead Rancher daughters still going strong and looking well. Cows of interest here were Peartree Rancher Patty and her daughter by Hylke, a fantastic pair who prove this family is breeding consistently. Last, but not least on the first day was Richard Boyd’s Shorne herd. On the way back to the busses the group came across Shorne Cynthia 53 the dam of Shorne Admiral, another bull that has recently been sold in Germany. Cynthia 53 has now completed four lactations and given just shy of 40,000kgs. Wednesday brought an early start for the group as we headed to Mary Mead’s Holt Farm to the Lakemead Herd. Farm manager Jon Wilson and his team showed the group around the whole herd and also showed them the youngstock farm to see some of the breeding bulls. Jon and the team came under a constant bombardment of questions from the group, who were in awe of the standard of this fine herd, in particular the powerhouse that was Lakemead Aricula 57. Next up were Brian Archer’s Collycroft and Bricroft herds, where among the herd of cows the highlight of the day was Bricroft Grey 83. And finally the delegates visited the Griffin family and their Kirkby Herd, it was great to see the herd and the exceptionally well developed cow families within it.

LEASBECK VISIT The visit to the Howarth family’s Leasbeck herd at Pickering,

Yorkshire, was much enjoyed by more than 40 people. Club chairman Sam Howarth laid on a fine spread with speakers on genetics, grassland and a vet to boot. The Club dinner was held at the Forest and Vale Hotel in Pickering and rounded off with a talk from the local undertaker who raised no dead, but many a laugh.

The following day consisted of a visit to the Genus bull stud at Whenby Lodge where several members were
