seem to have been much summer weather, but the summer shows have been in full swing and it has been a successful one for the Holstein breed. Despite numbers being down at most shows reflecting the current milk price crisis, the quality was consistently strong across the country. Trade for fresh cows and heifers at sales across the country has also reflected the continued down turn in the industry, but as ever the best UK genetics are still

in demand both at home and abroad. The theme for this issue is ‘Working with the Community’ which is perhaps more important now than ever. Any opportunity to portray a positive story about UK dairying and farming in general must be taken and exploited to its maximum benefit. While there is much to be downbeat about, the public need to hear about the good side of farming to ensure their continued support when shopping for food. There has been a drive recently for farms to actively get involved in the community in a way of linking food to fork and this must be built on to secure a sustainable, profitable future for British farming. Technical articles this issue compliment this theme looking at five ways to communicate with the local community and how to go about opening your farm. Other articles look at how to start flushing and classifying in the genomic era.

Looking forward the Young Breeders Weekend Rally is just around the corner, UK Dairy Day is fast approaching as well as the All Breeds All Britain Calf Show. All three of these events are a great chance to celebrate all that is good about UK Holstein breeding and the dairy sector as a whole, so if possible please do your best to support them and show you care about the future of the breed and industry.

Cycling for Bryan

Following the fundraising efforts of friends and family of Bryan Challenor for Motor Neurones Disease, this summer a cheque was presented by Bryan and Marion to MNDA for an incredible total of £86,492. Since Bryan was diagnosed with MND in 2014 friends, family and colleagues formed Cycling for Bryan and endured awful weather on their 1000 mile cycle from John O’Groats to Lands End which raised around £50,000. A black-tie dinner was then held at Telford International Centre, with more than 450 tickets sold the night which included live entertainment and a silent auction raised more than £35,000.
