Da w son Duel, the new r acing Alpine coas ter fromW iegand is bringing out the c ompetitiv e side of guests acro ss Belgium
M
any people were surprised when Bellew aerde announced their latest attr action, opting for a European first, a twin Alpine coast er from
Wiegand was revealed to be the latest addition t o the naturistic park. The opening of this coaster has seen t he park achieve two European firsts, not only is it the fir s t dueling Alpine coaster in Europe, it is also the only one that isn ’t constructed on a hillside, but on cust om-made stilts. The park is located in the city of Ypres in Belgium, which posed a challenge when it came to building Dawson Duel, as the land is completely flat – so Bellewaerde had to resort to creating their own hills. This led to the creation of a 25-meter high structure where the dueling adventure really starts. Guests must first walk through the wooded area, which consists mainly of steps and slopes until they arrive in the tree tops ready to race their friends and family.
Stefaan Lemey, director of Bellewaerde believes that Dawson Duel only adds to the parks mission of offering fun and adventure in a natural setting. “This unique attraction is custom-made for families as a target group. Only the combination of our motivated and helpful employees has made it possible. Aft er a long preparation time and an intensive construction phase, we can finally introduce this double European first to the public.”
Bellewaerde has always been a pioneer of launching innovative rides and experiences, part of our strategy is to keep surprising our visitors and Dawson Duel definitely helps us do that.”
This new 4m investment for the park is a true family ride, situated in the park’s Canada zone the name of the ride is a nod to Dawson city in Canada and an annual international dog sled race. Tobogganists are offered a special kick on the two parallel 490 metre tacks that reach speeds of up to 40 km/h, with almost no braking.
To
The famous ‘you brake, you lose’ motto is superfluous here, as the lever that serves as a brake on most toboggans is merely something to hold on to in this case. However the distance control system slows toboggans exceeding the maximum speed of 40 km/h and also prevents the risk of shunting. The dueling tracks consist of two downward helix turns and a number of bends and straights.
The hourly capacity of the attraction can reach up to 600 guests, who must be a minimum of 1m to ride. There is also a weight restriction in place, which indicates whether guests can ride or not with a green and red light system. Once riders reach the end of the track the empty toboggans are transported back up a steep hill to the station by a cable lift system, ready to ride again.
