Changes to government regulations and economic sluggishness have not been kind to amusement parks in Latin America. Brazil and Colombia in particular have underperformed, whilst Mexico, which leads the industry ranking, has been consolidated as the leader in the region. Astrid González Nariño reports.
BRAZIL
Amusement parks in Brazil have experienced difficult times in the last year, with many closing their doors and others forced to design strategies to stay in the market. The main cause is the government regulations that
require parks to pay high taxes in order to modernise equipment and to acquire new games. The Brazilian Association of Amusement Parks, ADIBRA, after intense negotiations with the Ministry of Tourism and other government agencies, secured fee exemptions, at least temporarily, for five parks including Beach Park, Unipraias Camboriú, Blue Park and Unipraias Gramado. However, taxes continue to be a threat to the industry.
After some years of exemption, the legislature of the municipality of Penha, neighboring Camboriú (state of Santa Catarina, in Brazil), decided that the famous park Beto Carrero World would begin to pay municipal taxes. The percentage was double what other municipalities charge (from 3 to 5 percent). As a result, amusement park operators suspended the investments they had planned for the expansion and

Brasil En Brasil los parques de atracciones han vivido tiempos difíciles en el último año. Muchos han cerrado sus puertas y otros se han visto obligados a diseñar estrategias para mantenerse en el mercado. La causa principal es la normatividad gubernamental
en lo relacionado con los altos impuestos que debían pagar para modernizar equipos y para adquirir nuevos juegos. En este sentido, la Asociación Brasilera de Parques de Atracciones, ADIBRA, después de una intensa gestión ante el Ministerio de Turismo y otros organismos de gobierno, logró que se establecieran exenciones delas tasas, al menos de manera temporal, para cinco parques, entre ellos: Beach Park, Unipraias Camboriú, Blue Park y Unipraias Gramado. Sin embargo, los impuestos siguen siendo una amenaza para la industria. Luego de algunos años de exención, el legislativo del municipio de Penha, vecino a Camboriú (estado de Santa Catarina, en Brasil), decidió que el famoso parque Beto Carrero World comience a tributar impuestos municipales. Y le incrementó al doble el porcentaje a cobrarle en relación con lo que cobran otros municipios (del 3 pasó al 5%).
