Retheming revamp for Walibi and Tiki-Waka A
s part of a multi-year master plan and a €100m investment, Compagnie des Alpes is re-imagining its Belgian Walibi theme park
as a collection of “worlds”, each with an immersive theme for its landscaping, attractions, restaurants, and shops. The first of these zones, which will reinforce existing themes and introduce new ones, is Exotic World, featuring a South Seas theme. Jora Vision was commissioned to bring this design to life. The zone welcomes guests to a Polynesian
paradise, where the main traction, Gerstlauer’s Tiki- Waka, is a single-car family coaster that reaches heights of up to 20m and speeds up to 55km/h. The ride is dressed in a tropical racecar theme, with carved wooden textures and lush vegetation all around, and even the loading station building is made of real Robinia wood, seemingly tied together with rope.
The façade of Challenge of Tutankhamon, the zone’s existing dark ride was redressed to blend into
its surroundings, and the Tiki-Theater has also been given a makeover. The new visual language of Exotic World extends to
the park’s play elements; Tikis spray water, emit sounds and can be interacted with like musical instruments. Landscaping elements such as bridges and lighting are constructions made out of bamboo, wood, seashells and tropical foliage. The food & beverage outlet sports shading made of tikis and thatched parasols, and even the restrooms follow the theme.
New developments at Jungle Island
Jungle Island, Florida, has introduced two new attractions; SuperFlight and NeoSplash. SuperFlight, from Aerodium, takes guests over Jungle Island in a 45-minute session that includes gearing and training by world-class Latvian wind tunnel instructors. Aerodium, Miami’s only outdoor skydiving simulator, is operated in partnership with Wind Cannon LLC. NeoSplash, located next to the Biscayne Bay, is a water park with four jumbo-sized inflatable slides as high as 65ft, designed with families and friends in mind. Additionally, three escape rooms with unique plots and themes are expected to open later
IAAPA Foundation inspires future industry leaders
Opportunities are now available, via the IAAPA Foundation, to support students pursuing careers in attractions management. Through academic scholarships, partnerships with colleges and universities, and educational events and roundtables, the IAAPA Foundation inspires students to learn about and aim for careers throughout the global attractions industry. Formed in 2010, the IAAPA Foundation, recently hosted an
Educators Roundtable at Asian Attractions Expo 2018, designates qualified students as "Future Leaders" for the attractions industry in partnership with colleges and universities, and supports students who are pursuing a career in the attractions industry through the Al Weber Scholarship Fund.
