The adventure begins...

1,000 guests gathered at Monteux, near Avignon, on June 1 to celebrate the opening of Parc Spirou – France’s newest family getaway with a nostalgic twist.

“ An €85m

investment, Parc Spirou spans four hectares, developed over a period of seven years, and is expected to create 250 jobs.

M

embers of the press, national and regional politicians, and the French Minister of Culture, Françoise Nyssen, joined Parc Spirou presidents

Daniel Bullard and Vincent Montagne as they presented the park’s inauguration ahead of its public opening. Parc Spirou is based upon and themed around the classic

Spirou comics created by French cartoonist Robert Velter in 1938, and made popular by Franquin, a Belgian author, from 1946 – 1968. An official series of 55 volumes, the Spirou spirit is still alive with the park now set to welcome visitors of all ages to join Spirou, Fantasio, Seccotine, and Spip. Globally recognised manufacturers Zierer and Simworx each

provided three attractions for the park, joining local businesses in a collaborative effort to design and build the park. There are three sets of attractions on offer at the park – classic coasters, family attractions, and dynamic digital simulators.

Ready, set, ride! Each of Zierer’s three Spirou-styled coasters offers a unique experience – Forward Seccotine is a gentle jaunt, taking guests on a tour around a replica of Mont Ventoux alongside Seccotine, a strong-willed journalist and explorer. ‘Wanted by Lucky Luke challenges riders to brave the Wild West and track down the Dalton brothers as they escape, once again, from prison. The final coaster, Spirou Racing, dominates the park landscape, towering 20m at its peak. Riders don their helmets and pilot glasses to race and retrace Spirou’s earliest adventures.

Family friendly fun Marsupilami and his little ones feature in their own attractions; Houbi and Houba face one another in the park, offering gravity-defying games in palm-shaped fall towers. The third ride, Marsu Palombia, invites guests into a whirling farandole complete with Mrs. Marsu’s colourful flowers, where riders can steer the vehicle up and down for a view across the park.

22 Fantasio, Spip, and the Count of Champignac join the fun,

too, with Fantasio Rodéo taking guests on the famous Turbotraction car, winding along a curled rail through a rodeo scene. The Count of Champignac’s ride, fittingly, takes the shape of a giant mushroom swing ride, lifting guests over 9m in single or double seats. And Spip, Spirou’s squirrel companion, guides riders through Spip Jumper on his trusty horse, Duster.

New worlds, old friends Simworx’s three digital simulation rides let guests delve even deeper into the Spirou story. In Gaffe à Gaston, riders are taken on a madcap adventure with Gaston, an accident-prone inventor, via a Stargazer Motion Theatre. Zombillenium lets ghouls and guests of all ages to explore an odd, imaginary amusement park thanks to Simworx’s trackless AGV dark ride system. And, finally, dinosaurs rise again on Mesozoik Island. After a short journey along a track into the main show area, riders meet the T-Rex and take a trip with Spirou on a jeep-style immersive tunnel simulator.

A foundation of fun Parc Spirou was founded on a premise of transgenerational fun inspired by a classic comic; whilst some members of the family will be meeting Spirou for the first time, others will be able to enjoy a throwback to their own childhood memories – but international guests won’t miss out on the magic! A combination of carefully selected references blended into the theming and ride scenes is balanced with innovative technology, making for a fantastique day-out with Spirou et compagnie. “The creation of this park is a real opportunity for our region.”

said Renaud Muselier, President of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Region. “With its innovative concept and the impact it will have on the local economic fabric, it will revitalize the territory of Vaucluse by creating activity and developing an attractive, strong tourist identity.”
