Dark Rides

Spokjakten, created by Sally Corp. for Furuvik park in Sweden

Stay tuned…

The popularity of dark rides is set to continue into 2019, particularly as developments in ride technology and interactivity mean increasingly diverse and exciting experiences. Here are some of the dark rides we can expect to see over the next 12 months…

Reese's Cupfusion, Hersheypark, USA Manufactured by Sally Corporation with design elements by Raven Sun Creative, the dark ride gaming experience, coming in 2019, takes the park’s love of chocolate and peanut butter as its central theme to “create a sweet sensory adventure for the entire family.” Riders are tasked with ensuring the world is never deprived of Reese's peanut butter cups by protecting the Reese's Central factory from Mint the Merciless and The League of Misfit Candy.

Sesame Street dark ride, PortAventura, Spain PortAventura’s first dark ride will be located in the new SésamoAventura area, which is designed for younger visitors. The attraction, suitable for all family members, will star the famous Sesame Street characters.

Ant Man and the Wasp: Nano Battle!, Hong King Disneyland A new interactive dark ride attraction based on the international box office hit will debut in 2019 as part of Hong Kong Disneyland’s on-going multi-year expansion. It will involve guests visiting the Science and Technology Pavilion at Stark Expo, before traveling in S.H.I.E.L.D.’s state- of-the-art vehicle to fight alongside Ant-Man and the Wasp, engaging in a battle against Zola and his army of Hydra swarm-bots.

This summer also saw Gardaland theme park in Italy

reopen newly updated dark ride I Corsari. The pirate- themed attraction has been a staple at the Italian theme park since 1992, and this year’s changes were made with the aim of upgrading the ride to incorporate a number of new technologies and techniques. New special effects include video mapping, soundtrack and audio effects, with a completely new story entitled, ‘I Corsari: La Vendetta del Fantasma’ - or Pirates: The Phantom’s Revenge, in English. The journey begins at the boarding area, where guests

are introduced to the narrative via a voice-over by the ghost of Captain Barbossa, who accompanies them through a number of unexpected adventures: witnessing duels, crossing underground worlds of supernatural creatures, abandoned villages and galleons, and finally facing off against a gigantic zombie-like sea monster. 3D projection mapping technology is used to produce 360- degree realistic environments, creating the illusion of immediacy and realism and allowing guests to experience the adventure in person. Supporting the new video content is a new original soundtrack, piped through the ride via more than 100 newly replaced speakers for maximum multi-sensory experience.

The production of the new soundtrack was created by Sample, which took care of everything from the arrangement to the orchestration of the various themes up to the finalization with mix and mastering. The ambiance of each part of the route has been developed individually to ensure that it matches the emotional development of the route, is a highly suggestive component: each area has an enveloping and completely immersive ambiance! Finally, particular attention was given to the voice of the ghost. With an hourly capacity of about 2500 people, the

attraction is composed of a path of about 600 meters underground, 2000 cubic meters of water and 22 boats for a / h making it the attraction with more hourly capacity of the park. Sweden’s first interactive dark ride opened at Furuvik

earlier this year, with an investment of over $3 million. Dark ride specialist Sally Corporation helped transformed the old dark ride ‘Spökborgen’ (the Ghost Castle) into a brand new interactive dark ride, with scary yet family friendly ghosts as shooting targets. The haunted dark ride is undoubtedly the most common, and likely the most favorite theme, Sally’s Drew Hunter told Park World. “We developed Spökjakten as a variation of the classic haunted dark ride specifically designed with the entire family in mind. Oh yes, it is creepy, but it isn’t too scary for the little ones. The attraction has an unusual, surreal style and a real sense of macabre whimsy.” Spökjakten is housed in a wonderfully themed, very

large castle façade which dominates the landscape of Furuvik park. “It is a real landmark in the park!” says Hunter. “The attraction also has an atmospheric queue – with a few surprises – which helps get guests in the mood for the haunted adventure. Along the way they will meet Professor Finkelstein, a very lifelike animatronic figure, who will explain the ride’s backstory. Another unique element is that the scenery and spooks seen throughout the entire ride experience are rendered in ultraviolet paint. Everything glows in brilliant colors, and although all is weird, wacky and haunted, it is a beautiful show to behold.”
