As with most businesses, the main challenge is


recruitment and training of the staff, Higginson reveals. “We have been lucky to recruit people who have fair amount of experience using VR equipment and are very keen video game players. On top of that they have all worked in customer service environment and are used to very high standards of service. This allows us to deliver excellent service during peak times when we are fully booked and engage efficiently with everyone.”


#ChallengeReality VR Park, by Emaar Entertainment (pictured opposite page), is a two-story attraction at The Dubai Mall, which uses augmented and virtual reality to provide live and interactive rides, journeys and games. The 7,000sqm VR Park has been created in


partnership with content and technology developer Starbreeze Studios, and will host a total of 18 different VR experiences via the StarVR 5K 210- degree head-mounted display. Experiences include: trying to survive a zombie


infested hospital in the apocalyptic The Walking Dead Outbreak; the hair-raising Dune Bash experience featuring close encounters with camel spiders, scorpions and other thrilling creatures, and stunning aerial views in virtual skydiving trip Plummet. Alternatively, guests can propel down the side of the Burj Khalifa skyscraper in Burj Drop, or man their own spaceship in a world full of aliens and space stations, in Robocom. Younger children will especially enjoy Geminose: The VR Carousel, which features beautiful and playful creatures in an exploration of magic, music and dance in a mystical world.


Holographic design Touted as “the world’s first fully holographic entertainment centre”, Holoverse is a family friendly tourist attraction located on Australia’s Gold Coast. Forty hologram rooms operate daily with a variety of experiences to choose from. Eric van Niekerk says: “Euclideon is best known for its Unlimited Detail (UD) 3D visualisation technology. Euclideon CEO Bruce Dell had always had an interest in designing games using Unlimited Detail. When Euclideon came up with their first hologram

room, it was a perfect match for these games to be played in. This was the start of the planning for a full arcade where customers could come in and play games, enjoy different experiences and even educate children in unique and unusual ways.” Holoverse uses innovative hologram technology.


Unlike VR, where you wear a screen over your eyes, objects are projected around you using holograms, i.e. coloured light, so users feel like they are really in the experience as you can move around the objects in front of you. “We have designed the experience to appeal to


a very broad market, from young children who love Veggie Patch Valley to adults who love the planetarium experience. reality, and encourages the ‘eAthletes’ to incorporate competitive strategies and teamwork. Spectators are also engaged and entertained by the live action along with local and cloud-streamed in-game broadcasts. VRcade PowerPlay’s competitive matches can be dynamically configured with millions of combinations of multiplayer game modes, arm cannon presets, and battlefield configurations. Designed to be played by teams of two to eight eAthletes moving unrestricted on a 60’x40’ configurable ‘Battlefield’, VRcade PowerPlay is managed by attraction management platform VRcade AMP. It runs on the commercial VRcade Arena system, which requires no additional physical infrastructure or props. The combination of VRcade PowerPlay, AMP and Arenas create a turnkey solution for operators.

The company is currently working on some great new entertainment concepts, and of course rolling the unique concept out overseas.”


A new dimension Provider of turnkey immersive entertainment solutions Hologate’s multiplayer virtual reality attraction delivers advanced graphic technology in a small footprint, aimed at family entertainment centres, malls, arcades and theme parks. Players can fight robots, dragons and zombies,


throw a virtual snow ball or bond together and try to escape a sinking submarine. With a 5-10 minute gameplay accommodating 1-4 players at a time, the game is designed for a high customer throughput. The company reports that more than 100 units


have been sold in the last six months - the majority of which have already been installed.
