sing virtual reality to enhance existing rides and attractions has become a relatively low cost way for parks to both update their


attractions and boost their technology credibility in recent years. Following issues with throughput and equipment, however, focus has shifted towards using VR as an attraction in and of itself, concentrating on interactivity and quality of content. Park World takes a look at some of the latest VR projects pushing the limits of visitor attractions around the world...


Pods away! British company Immotion opened the first VR Star outlet in Bristol, UK, late last year, creating a superior out-of-home virtual reality experience with its VR Cinema Pods. With their next-gen appearance, the Pods engage all the senses by combining advanced sight, sound and multi-directional motion with premium content from award-winning creators. With more than 30 years’ experience in the story- telling business, the Immotion team creates its

content in-house, and has worked in partnership with the likes of Keith Chapman, the BBC, Toyota, Lexus, and Ferrari. “With a range of content, designed to entertain people whatever their tastes and preferences, the Pods offer a great family day out,” says executive chairman Martin Higginson. “Whether it’s running with dinosaurs, flying with dragons, diving deep in the ocean, or a thrill-seeking adventure ride, we have the ability to teleport customers to new virtual worlds.” The unit is 110sqm, including back of house, and


tickets are priced at £20 for 30 minutes or £30 for an hour. The facility has a maximum capacity of 12 people. “The design process evolved mainly around the customer journey, making sure the flow of visitors is as efficient and comfortable as possible,” explains Higginson. “The equipment does great job in making the place stand out in terms of look and feel. Immotion works with designers that have been involved in our other projects so they fully understand and deliver what we were looking for. In Bristol, the installation process was very smooth due to the way the equipment is delivered. There is very little assembly needed and we have great installation team that delivered the project smoothly and on time.”
