With a lavishly staged medieval theme, the new area at Schloss Dankern holiday park in Germany creates an experiential journey through the Middle Ages, with numerous possibilities for play along the way – including a 14m high, two-car roller coaster by ABC Rides
T
he ceremonial opening of Arkan Castle took place on Friday, March 16, at Germany’s largest holiday park and leisure centre, Schloss Dankern. Located in the
middle of the Emsland area in northwest Germany, Schloss Dankern is based on approximately 200 hectares surrounding the seventeenth century moated castle Dankern, and offers over 200 games, recreational and sports opportunities for holidaymakers. The new area is the conclusion of a two-year investment program totalling approximately 7.4 million euros, and also including the construction of 18 new holiday homes, new tennis and beach volleyball courts and a new reception building for the 2018 season. "We are Germany's first holiday park with a roller
coaster," says Schloss Dankern owner and managing director Friedhelm Freiherr von Landsberg-Velen. "But we have not just built a rollercoaster: the roller coaster, which is lined with numerous play and climbing elements, is the only one of its kind in the world and can reach a height of over 14 metres." Created over the past 12 months at a cost of over 4 million euros, Arkan Castle marks a new step for the business.
APRIL 2018
With 4600 beds in more than 750 holiday cottages, the majority of visitors are people already holidaying at Schloss Dankern. With the addition of Arkan Castle and the new coaster, the operator hopes to both raise value for their existing guests, and also attract more daily visitors, aiming to take Schloss Dankern, currently one of the biggest holiday parks in Europe, into the amusement park market. With a primary target market of families with kids under 12
years, Schloss Dankern also sees visitors from schools and families with older kids – and its latest addition has features designed to meet the demands of all its demographics. Within Arkan Castle visitors can find 3,500 square metres of playgrounds, slides, climbing walls and more, all the way up to the entrance of the ride, which is at the highest point. The castle also has a playground especially for very
young kids, those around 1 to 4 years of age, which is separated from the other areas so that they can play safely. The other playgrounds and experiences, all of which all have a medieval theme, are suited for children aged 4-12. The ride itself, a tube coaster by ABC Rides, has a minimum height of one metre - the highest attraction at Schloss Dankern so far - and aims to attract older kids than in previous years.
