36 INDUSTRY INSIDER: MARK MCGUINNESS 6

There’s something about the first major gatherings of the year that sets the tone for everything that follows, and this year’s visits to ICE Barcelona and the iGB Affiliate show did exactly that. After months of planning, previews and preparation, stepping onto a busy show floor packed with developers, operators and affiliates was a timely reminder of just how vibrant and fast-moving our industry really is.

What stood out most was the sense of momentum. The meetings and conversations I had with exhibitors weren’t cautious or tentative; they were confident, forward-looking and full of practical plans and ideas. From platform innovation and data-driven personalisation, to advances in payments, compliance tools and player protection, it was clear that the pace of development across the iGaming ecosystem is not only continuing but accelerating.

Equally encouraging was the atmosphere. There’s an energy that only comes from live events and meeting face-to-face. The spontaneous discussions, the chance encounters that turn into partnerships, and the opportunity to see products demonstrated in real time bring everything to life. For affiliates, the focus on smarter acquisition, retention strategies and sustainable traffic models suggested a maturing sector that is thinking beyond short-term gains.

Perhaps most importantly, the shows provided a strong sense of optimism. Challenges remain, of course: evolving regulation, rising compliance expectations and ever-higher player standards are now part of the landscape. But the prevailing mood in Barcelona was one of confidence that the industry is well equipped to meet them.

If these early gatherings are any indication, the year ahead looks set to be a productive and successful one for iGaming. The technology is advancing, the talent pool continues to grow, and the appetite for innovation shows no sign of slowing. It’s hard not to come away feeling that the best chapters of this story are still being written. You can read our full review of the events in Barcelona starting on page 8.
