The Branded Tile Company - A new start-up in a world of big players J


ohn Chater launched The Branded Tile Company during lockdown as he saw an


opportunity to resurrect a portfolio of products that were meeting a growing customer need and on the verge of disappearing. ‘The tiling category is really very manufacturer led, with volume a key measure of success.’ says Chater, ‘I’ve a background in FMCG brands where you win by focussing on the customer and their needs, not on how best you fill your large format kilns.’. The portfolio included ranges like the Victoria &


Albert Museum, which had been successful for several years and had existing trade and end users asking for more variety. ‘The V&A range had been a great success, but


we could see a real opportunity to grow by revitalising the brand with new designs inspired by the V&A’s amazing archives. We secured the license and now our new Omar & Mina tiles are proving a real hit with tile buyers looking for new designs, in keeping with customers being bolder in their design choices.’ says Chater. Claire O’Brien, an industry design consultant, has


been working with John on the business and its design direction. ‘You can see just from the images posted on


Instagram and Pinterest it’s no longer a sea of beige, interiors trends for 2021 are numerous with no right or wrong. Homeowners have a newfound confidence and are seeking a distinctive and unique


look that is ‘theirs‘, smattered with a sprinkling of shock factor.’. ‘From out of the darkness or ‘greyness’ comes
