The BKU Year in Review 2020 W


elcome to the December issue of BKU magazine. As is traditional


at this time of year, we look back at some of the companies and stories making the news this year, showcasing all that was worthy of celebration in 2020. Of course, we have to start with the


coronavirus pandemic. While the first national lockdown in March had a crippling effect on the economy at large, there are plenty of great stories out there of companies in our sector diversifying their businesses, not just to survive but to get ready for the boom we’re all expecting in the home improvement sector. It’s also been so heartening to hear of all the tradespeople going the extra mile to help customers in need during lockdown and beyond. Just before the first lockdown in March, BKU


Magazine attended the KBB Show in Birmingham, to meet and interview a number of companies, and to take the temperature of the industry. Unsurprisingly, coronavirus was a major talking point, but what also stood out was the industry’s commitment to product development and innovation, which we saw amply demonstrated across the show’s many halls. In our interviews with the likes of AEG, The CDA Group, KitchenEx and RAK Ceramics, what was striking was the industry’s desire to keep moving forward, to keep serving customers and to keep


challenging consumers’ expectations of what the industry could deliver. Because of this, it was very important to us


that the BKU Awards went ahead this year. On 16th July the great and good in our industry gathered virtually to celebrate and recognise the fantastic work of all in the sector. The list of winners is too numerous to put down here, but perhaps two names deserve mention – Alistair Fleming from Alistair Fleming Design, winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award; and Nathan MacLean of Virtual Worlds, the first recipient of the inaugural David Caulfield Outstanding Contribution Award. I had the pleasure of interviewing Nathan after the Awards, an interview which is available to view on our homepage. All of us here on the team would like to extend our thanks to everyone who took part, and particularly to our sponsors, who helped make the event the huge success it was. So while 2020 is almost certainly a year we’ll all


want to forget, we’re proud to have been a part of our sector this year and are looking ahead to brighter times in 2021. Whatever happens, we know that all of you in the industry will continue to exceed your customers’ expectations and drive
